Ariana Grande sent Christmas gifts to children at four Manchester hospitals

Ariana Grande’s relationship with Manchester did not end when the lights went down at the Manchester Arena in May 2017. Seven years after the attack that killed 22 people following her concert, the singer continued a quiet tradition of sending Christmas gifts to children spending the holiday season in hospitals across Greater Manchester.

In December 2024, the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust charity confirmed that her donations had reached young patients at four hospitals. The gifts were distributed to babies, children and teenagers at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, Trafford General Hospital, Wythenshawe Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital. According to ITV News, the charity publicly thanked Grande and said it was grateful she had thought of its young patients at Christmas.

The gesture was not a one-time act of generosity, but part of a connection that has continued since the tragedy.

A bond formed in grief

Grande was performing at the Manchester Arena on May 22, 2017, when a suicide bomber attacked the venue as concertgoers were leaving. Twenty-two people were killed and many more were injured, turning a night of music into one of the deadliest attacks in recent British history. In the days that followed, Grande returned to Manchester to organise the One Love Manchester benefit concert.

The event raised money for the victims and their families, while also offering the city a moment of collective healing. Her response earned her honorary citizenship of Manchester in 2017, as per reports. The singer later spoke openly about the emotional toll of the attack. BBC News reported that Grande experienced post-traumatic stress disorder after the bombing, a reality that makes her continued support for Manchester’s hospitals especially meaningful.

Christmas gifts for young patients

The 2024 donation was confirmed by the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust charity shortly before Christmas. It said the presents were being shared among babies, children and teenagers across the four hospitals, bringing a moment of comfort to families spending the festive period away from home.Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital has been a particular focus of Grande’s support. ITV News noted that she has maintained a long-standing relationship with the hospital since the 2017 attack, and that her gifts have reached patients across the wider Greater Manchester hospital network as well. For children in hospital, Christmas can be especially difficult. Medical routines, treatment schedules and separation from normal holiday celebrations can make the season feel distant. A gift from a globally known artist does not change those circumstances, but it can remind young patients and their families that they have not been forgotten.

A tradition that has continued

This was not the first time Grande had sent presents to Manchester’s hospitals.

In December 2020, she donated gifts and Amazon vouchers to patients at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and Manchester Royal Infirmary, according to BBC News. Two years later, in 2022, her donations again reached children and newborn intensive care units at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, North Manchester General Hospital, Wythenshawe Hospital and Saint Mary’s Hospital. ITV News reported that gifts and vouchers were distributed to young patients during that Christmas period as well. The repetition matters. One donation can be seen as a kind gesture, but repeated support over several years suggests a genuine, ongoing relationship with the city and its hospital communities. It also shows how Grande has chosen to honour Manchester not only through public tributes, but through practical acts of care.

Why the gesture resonates

Grande’s connection to Manchester began in tragedy, yet the way she has responded has been defined by empathy rather than distance.

She could have stepped away from the city after the attack. Instead, she returned for the benefit concert, accepted honorary citizenship and continued supporting children in local hospitals. Her actions also highlight the quieter side of celebrity philanthropy. There were no large public campaigns or promotional events attached to the hospital donations. The Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust charity simply thanked her, and the gifts were distributed to patients across the region. That understated approach has made the gesture more powerful. It suggests that Grande’s connection to Manchester is personal, shaped by the people affected by the attack and by the families she has continued to support years later.

A bond that endures

Seven years after the Manchester Arena attack, Ariana Grande’s Christmas gifts are a small but potent reminder of the bond between singer and city. The donations reached children in hospitals across Greater Manchester, offering comfort during a season that can be especially hard for families dealing with illness and hospital stays. There is more to the story than presents. It’s about a city and an artist moving a shared loss forward, in the choice to care, to remember and support rather than forget. Grande’s continued generosity shows that the connection formed in 2017 has remained part of her relationship with Manchester ever since.
