Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre has recognised the decades of service brothers Dr Peter Archer Wilwyn St Rose and Dr St George Bennett Richardson St Rose gave to Saint Lucia’s healthcare system, describing their contributions to the development of specialist medical services as immeasurable.
In a statement on Thursday, Pierre extended condolences to their family, colleagues, friends and the wider medical fraternity.
“Saint Lucia has lost two specialist physicians who contributed significantly to healthcare development over several decades,” he said.
Dr P.A.W. St Rose, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, died on October 3, 2026, aged 90. His brother, Dr Richardson St Rose, a consultant orthopaedic, spinal and trauma surgeon, died on October 11 days later at age 80.
Dr P.A.W. St Rose began his medical career in Soufrière in 1967 as a district medical officer before working in the Accident and Emergency Department at Victoria Hospital.
After returning from the United Kingdom in 1973, he provided specialist obstetric and gynaecological care until his retirement. His work included supporting women through pregnancy and childbirth and providing reproductive health services through Family Planning Clinics in Castries.
He also trained and mentored physicians locally and overseas and served on the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Council, the Nursing Council and other national health committees.
Dr Richardson St Rose returned to Saint Lucia from Trinidad and Tobago in 1975 and served as chief consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Ministry of Health and as a senior surgeon at Victoria Hospital.
His work helped strengthen the country’s capacity to treat serious injuries and complex bone, joint and spinal conditions. As a visiting specialist at St Jude Hospital, he provided consultations and surgical services to patients in the south.
He also practised at Tapion Hospital from 1997 to 2023 and provided specialist care through his private practice on Chaussee Road, Castries.
Together, the brothers helped establish and sustain specialist services across public and private healthcare, serving generations of Saint Lucians.
