Guwahati, Oct 25: Four people were killed and two others injured after a speeding vehicle carrying fresh tea leaves collided with multiple vehicles on the Samdung Bypass under Doomdooma police station in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Saturday evening, triggering a fire that gutted vehicles at the accident site.
Tinsukia Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mayank Kumar Jha confirmed the preliminary death toll, cautioning that the figures could change as more information emerged.
“As of now, the preliminary information available to us indicates that four people have died and two have been injured. Further details are being ascertained; the figures may change,” Jha said.
The SSP visited the accident site soon after the incident and supervised the response as police and emergency personnel worked to manage the situation.
The cause of the fire remains unclear, with police awaiting the findings of a technical investigation.
“What exactly happened is being investigated. As you can see, the vehicles have caught fire. A technical investigation will establish how the fire broke out,” Jha said.
According to preliminary reports, the tea-leaf-laden vehicle collided with a Thar, a motorcycle and a pedestrian. The impact was followed by a fire that engulfed vehicles at the scene, leaving the motorcycle completely gutted.
Three of the deceased were identified in preliminary reports as Subrata Bhattacharjee, Pintu Tanti and Ganesh Praja. The fourth victim had not been identified at the time of filing this report. Further details about the victims and the condition of the injured were awaited.
Fire and emergency services rushed to the spot to bring the blaze under control. The accident also triggered tension in the surrounding area, prompting the deployment of police personnel to maintain order.
The tragedy has drawn sharp reactions from local organisations, with leaders of the All Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA), Doomdooma, expressing shock and urging Tinsukia District Commissioner Sumit Sattawan to visit the accident site.
An ATTSA leader said the incident had raised serious concerns about pedestrian safety on the bypass and called for urgent intervention by the district administration.
“The accident has raised serious questions about the safety of pedestrians on the Samdung Bypass. The deaths in this horrific crash have angered local organisations. We demand that the administration ensure the safety of pedestrians and take the necessary road-safety measures at the earliest,” the leader said.
The crash has renewed concerns over road safety on the Samdung Bypass, where several accidents have reportedly occurred this year, claiming multiple lives. The latest incident has intensified demands for immediate safety measures to protect pedestrians and motorists.
Police are investigating the circumstances leading to the collision and the subsequent fire.
