Ohio State endured a significant loss during its 19-15 win over Indiana on Saturday. Quarterback Julian Sayin suffered an injury to his throwing arm midway through the fourth quater, necessitating a sling. He’s expected to miss several weeks, with a return date not established.
To everyone’s surprise, Luke Fahey, a 5-foot-11 true freshman who was a four-star prospect, took over at quarterback following the injury. Sophomore Tavien St. Clair, a highly touted former five-star prospect who is 6-4, stayed on the bench, in what has become a somewhat controversial decision by Ryan Day.
On the “Triple Option” podcast on Monday, former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer criticized the decision.
“It’s perplexing why he’s not the quarterback. You know, why he doesn’t jog on the field when Sayin went down?” Meyer said.
Despite the late injury, Sayin was still the leading passer for the Buckeyes over the weekend. In the 19-15 win over the Hoosiers, Sayin threw for 235 yards, with two touchdown passes and two interceptions. Fahey only had two pass attempts during the game, both incompletions.
What did Ryan Day say about Julian Sayin’s injury?
On Monday evening, Ryan Day spoke about the Julian Sayin injury on a local radio show in Columbus. His answer was, at best, unspecific about Sayin’s situation.
Here’s what the Buckeyes coach said about his quarterback:
“It’ll be at least several weeks, but no update right now,” Day said during the “Buckeye Roundtable” show on 97.1 The Fan in Columbus. “They’re still going through some of their testing and some of their meetings.”
Sayin was considered one of the favorites for the Heisman Trophy up until he was injured. He has 2,007 passing yards (third in the country), with 19 touchdown passes (third) and four interceptions. He ranked 10th among signal-callers in the FBS in QBR, with a rating of 84.5.
Last season, Julian Sayin was a Heisman Trophy finalist.
