Ranchers Bees Kaduna have appointed former Niger Tornadoes coach Ma’aji Muhammad as their new head coach, following the departure of Technical Adviser Usman Abd’Allah and some members of the club’s technical crew after a disappointing start to the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season. Blueprint reports
Muhammad’s appointment comes days after the Kaduna-based club suffered a 3-1 defeat to Shooting Stars in Ibadan, a result that intensified concerns over the team’s performance and preceded a major shake-up in its technical department.
The club confirmed on Sunday, October 18, 2026 that it had parted ways with Abd’Allah and some members of his technical crew by mutual agreement, bringing an end to the coach’s 115-day spell in charge.
The announcement followed an earlier report that the club had dissolved its technical crew in the wake of the defeat to Shooting Stars.
In its statement, Ranchers Bees thanked Abd’Allah and the departing members of the technical team for their contributions and wished them success in their future endeavours. However, the club did not explicitly attribute the decision to any single match or performance-related issue.
Poor results trigger technical shake-up
The decision came against the backdrop of a difficult opening nine matches for Ranchers Bees, who returned to the NPFL this season after 16 years away from the top flight.
Under Abd’Allah, the newly promoted side recorded two wins, two draws and five defeats, collecting eight points from a possible 27. The team scored 10 goals and conceded 13, leaving it with a negative goal difference of three.
The results placed Ranchers Bees in the relegation zone, with the club struggling to establish consistency in a campaign in which survival in the top flight remains a major challenge.
The Bees began their campaign with a 1-3 defeat to Ikorodu City before responding impressively with a 4-0 victory over Abia Warriors. They followed that result with a 2-1 win against Bendel Insurance, raising hopes that the team could compete effectively in its return to the elite division. However, the early promise proved difficult to sustain.
Ranchers Bees subsequently lost 1-3 to Barau and 0-1 to Enugu Rangers before drawing goalless with Rivers United. A 1-2 defeat to Kwara United was followed by another goalless draw against Niger Tornadoes, leaving the team without a victory in four consecutive matches.
The 1-3 loss to Shooting Stars extended the winless run to five league games and brought renewed attention to the team’s struggles.
The sequence of results exposed the difficulty of maintaining momentum after promotion, with the team unable to turn its promising home performances into consistent results across the campaign.
Why the club moved for a change
Although Ranchers Bees described Abd’Allah’s departure as a mutual agreement, the timing of the decision points to mounting pressure over the team’s early-season performances.
A reported ultimatum from the club’s General Manager, Alhaji Kabiru Muazu, popularly known as 2Pac, had also emerged amid concerns over the team’s results.
The details of the reported ultimatum were not formally established in the club’s announcement.
For a newly promoted side, five defeats in nine matches and a position in the relegation zone represent significant setbacks. The management’s decision to make changes to the technical crew can therefore be viewed within the context of its need to arrest the decline before the situation becomes more difficult to reverse.
The departure of some technical advisers alongside the head coach also suggests a wider restructuring of the team’s coaching arrangement rather than a change limited to the individual at the top.
Nevertheless, the club has not publicly detailed the specific tactical, administrative or personnel concerns that informed the decision. It would therefore be premature to attribute the shake-up to any particular disagreement or technical deficiency without further confirmation.
Ma’aji faces immediate challenge
Muhammad takes charge at a crucial point in Ranchers Bees’ return to the NPFL, with the team needing to improve its results and move away from the relegation zone.
His experience with Niger Tornadoes offers him familiarity with the demands of Nigerian top-flight football. However, the immediate task will be to translate that experience into results with a Ranchers Bees side that has struggled to maintain consistency.
The new coach will need to address the team’s defensive vulnerabilities, improve its ability to secure points away from home and restore confidence among the players following the recent run of disappointing results.
Ranchers Bees have lost all four of their away matches in the league so far, including defeats to Ikorodu City, Barau, Enugu Rangers and Shooting Stars. Improving that record will be particularly important if the Kaduna club hopes to build a sufficient points cushion to avoid a prolonged relegation battle.
The team’s next league fixture is against Doma United on October 25, providing Muhammad with an immediate opportunity to begin rebuilding momentum.
A test of the club’s new direction
The appointment represents a fresh start for Ranchers Bees, but changing the coach alone will not automatically resolve the challenges facing the team.
The effectiveness of the new technical arrangement will depend on how quickly Muhammad establishes his approach, improves the team’s organisation and gets the players responding positively on the pitch.
With the season still in its early stages, Ranchers Bees have time to recover, but the margin for further setbacks is narrowing as other clubs continue to accumulate points.
For the Kaduna side, the priority is now clear: convert the change in technical leadership into improved performances, greater consistency and results capable of securing its place in the NPFL.
