Passive income has been a staple of building wealth since investing became a thing, and each year, investors look for new venues to generate some cash without constantly monitoring their portfolios. With 2026 slowly coming to a close, we asked ChatGPT to identify three of the best passive income ideas for 2027.
According to the machine learning algorithm, dividend stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), low-cost index funds, and savings accounts are most likely to be the most accessible options next year. What’s more, each strategy offers different advantages, ranging from recurring cash payments to long-term capital appreciation.
1. Dividend-paying stocks and ETFs
ChatGPT ranked dividend-paying stocks and ETFs among the leading options for investors seeking recurring income. The reason is simple: these investments allow shareholders to receive distributions without having to sell their holdings.
For example, a $10,000 portfolio yielding 3% annually would generate approximately $300 in dividends per year before taxes, assuming the yield remains unchanged. Investors can then either withdraw the payments or reinvest them to purchase additional shares and potentially compound their returns over time.
Dividend-focused ETFs work similarly, but they can also provide you with exposure to multiple companies at the same time through a single investment. This reduces the need to select and monitor individual stocks.
However, it bears mentioning that diversification via ETFs does not eliminate market risk, and a high dividend yield does not necessarily indicate a sound investment. What’s more, companies can reduce or suspend dividends, and funds can lose value.
2. Low-cost index funds
Next are low-cost index funds, which also include ETFs tracking broad stock-market indexes as another way to build wealth with relatively little ongoing management. In short, rather than attempting to identify individual winning stocks, investors gain exposure to a diversified basket of companies and can then invest regularly over time.
Accumulating ETFs automatically reinvest dividends, while distributing ETFs pay them to investors. This allows investors to choose between compounding and receiving cash payments. The main advantage is simplicity: investors can establish a regular investment plan and avoid frequent trading or constant portfolio adjustments.
Of course, index funds are not risk-free either. Namely, their value can decline sharply during market downturns, and returns are not guaranteed over any particular period. Accordingly, ChatGPT highlighted index funds as particularly suitable for people with a long investment horizon, that is, those who do not necessarily need immediate cash income.
3. Savings accounts and term deposits
Finally, the chatbot mentioned savings accounts and term deposits for those prioritizing capital preservation over potentially higher investment returns, as these financial instruments generate interest on deposited cash without requiring investors to manage stocks.
There is a notable difference between the two options. Namely, savings accounts generally provide easier access to money, but term deposits may offer a fixed interest rate in exchange for locking funds away for an agreed period.
Of course, actual returns depend on the interest rate, deposit conditions, applicable taxes, inflation, etc. The trade-off is thus that interest income may be lower than the potential long-term returns from equities, and inflation can erode purchasing power. This is why savings accounts and term deposits are consequently better suited to emergency reserves and shorter-term financial goals.
What is the best passive income strategy for 2027?
Ultimately, the most suitable passive income strategy depends on each individual investor’s goals, starting capital, time horizon, and, most importantly, risk tolerance.
Among ChatGPT’s suggestions highlighted above, dividend-paying investments can generate recurring cash flow, index funds can support long-term wealth accumulation, and savings accounts or term deposits can provide interest income with comparatively limited risk.
Picking one or combining the three may be more practical than relying on a single source of income. Maintaining a cash reserve, investing regularly in diversified funds and adding dividend-paying assets according to individual financial goals can help balance liquidity, income and growth.
