Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM) has suspended its proposed increase of undergraduate school fees for the 2026/2027 academic session, following concerns raised by students.
The vice-chancellor, Isaac Itodo, announced the decision in a statement on Monday in Makurdi, stating that the fees would remain unchanged for the session.
Mr Itodo said the decision followed consultations with relevant administrative bodies and careful consideration of students’ concerns about the economic challenges facing their families.
He acknowledged the financial difficulties confronting parents and guardians in meeting their children’s educational needs.
The vice-chancellor added that the university remained committed to sustaining its development while prudently managing available resources.
He explained that the decision to resume academic activities promptly aimed at recovering valuable academic time lost to strikes and other delays.
According to him, the university also intended to ensure the academic session progressed sufficiently ahead of the commencement of the 2027 general elections.
Mr Itodo stressed the need to protect the academic calendar and prevent further interruptions from affecting students’ academic progress.
He, however, expressed disappointment over some confrontational approaches adopted by students, including the circulation of flyers bearing the inscription, “ITODO MUST GO”.
Mr Itodo urged students to express their grievances responsibly, stressing that while criticism was welcome, violence, intimidation and actions capable of disrupting academic activities would not be tolerated.
“You have every right to question decisions and express your concerns, but I urge you to do so responsibly.
“Criticism is welcome; violence, intimidation and actions that threaten our University’s peace and reputation are not,” he said.
Mr Itodo advised students not to allow themselves to be used to disrupt academic activities, noting that established channels for dialogue were available to address their concerns.
He reaffirmed his commitment to providing quality education and developing the university, urging students to put their differences aside and focus on their education and future.
