AFRICANSART, an organisation dedicated to promoting African art, has launched an initiative to preserve the continent’s cultural heritage, create opportunities for artists and strengthen relationships between creators and collectors.
Known as Art Scroll, the initiative seeks to deepen appreciation of African art through interactive platforms that allow artists to share the stories behind their works and engage directly with collectors.
The Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of AfricansArt, Mr Victor Onochie Oba, outlined the vision at an event dubbed “Art Scroll: The Stories We Carry”, organised in partnership with Château NaNa Willine on Friday.
He said African art should not be viewed merely as a form of cultural expression but also recognised, valued and preserved as an enduring part of the continent’s collective heritage.
Mr Oba explained that artworks carried stories of identity, history, struggle, beauty and imagination, offering people an opportunity to understand different experiences and perspectives beyond spoken words.
He said Art Scroll was designed to go beyond conventional exhibitions by creating interactive experiences that encouraged dialogue, knowledge-sharing and lasting relationships between artists and collectors.
The platform, he added, would allow artists to explain the inspiration and creative processes behind their works while helping collectors develop a deeper appreciation of the pieces they acquired.
“For collectors, it offers something deeper than a transaction: a personal connection to the artist, a better understanding of the work, and the opportunity to become a custodian of a story that may outlive us,” he said.
Mr Oba said AfricansArt was committed to creating lasting value for the African art industry by expanding income-generating opportunities for artists, strengthening collectors’ confidence and promoting the proper documentation and preservation of significant artworks.
He said the organisation was also exploring the responsible use of technology and transparent ownership records to support the identification, tracking and preservation of African artworks.
He stressed, however, that technology would remain secondary to the art itself, the artists, the stories their works conveyed and the trust connecting creators with collectors.
Mr Oba expressed appreciation to Château NaNa Willine for providing a welcoming environment for artistic expression, cultural exchange and meaningful conversations.
