New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson addressed her team’s 1-4 start on Tuesday at the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club. It is the second straight season New Orleans has opened with one win in its first five games.
“I want to address where we stand. We are 1-4. And that is not acceptable to me,” Benson said. “Our fans invest their time and their hearts in the Saints. They are right to expect more than we have delivered.”
New Orleans opened with a 31-30 overtime loss to the Detroit Lions that included a disputed fumble call, beat the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2 and has since lost three straight at home, starting with a narrow loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. That stretch includes a 45-24 Monday night loss to the Atlanta Falcons on the 20th anniversary of the 2006 Domecoming game and a 23-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday in which the offense managed nine first downs. The defense ranks 31st in the league in points allowed.
“As an owner, the responsibility does start with me. I will not make excuses, and I will not accept this level of performance as our standard,” Benson said.
“Kellen Moore and his coaches are responsible for preparing our players to perform,” she continued. “Mickey Loomis and our football staff are responsible for building a roster capable of sustained success. Our players are responsible for their preparation and execution. I am responsible for holding this organization accountable.”

Why Mickey Loomis is on the same clock as Kellen Moore
Moore is in his second season after going 6-11 in his first. Loomis has been the general manager since 2002, and Benson named his job in the same breath as Moore’s. That places the executive who built this roster inside the same accountability statement as a second-year coach, which widens the circle of people the next few weeks will judge.

Benson announced no changes, though she said, “I am committed to making the decisions necessary to improve this team. Everyone in this organization understands the urgency. We must prepare better, execute consistently and correct the mistakes that are costing us the games.”
“Words will not restore our fans’ confidence,” she added. She also held the current team to the standard Drew Brees set during his 15 seasons in New Orleans.
The Saints visit the 3-1-1 New York Giants on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Good news for Saints: no team in the NFC South has a winning record, which leaves New Orleans within reach of the division lead despite the “unacceptable start.
