DES MOINES: TANZANIA has announced a move to expand job opportunities for women and young people through investments in deep-sea fishing and the blue economy.
Prime Minister Mwigulu said this during a discussion with International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Vice-President Geraldine Mukeshimana on the sidelines of the Norman E. Borlaug International Dialogue in Des Moines, Iowa, United States, on Tuesday.
In their conversation, the PM thanked IFAD for financing deep-sea fishing projects under the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries and supporting blue economy development through Zanzibar’s Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries.
“These projects are important and are being given greater priority because they help create jobs for women and young people,” he said.

For her part, Dr Mukeshimana commended Tanzania for its contribution to regional food security, describing the country as a major source of food production for neighbouring areas.
“I congratulate you because you have continued to be a hub for reliable food production in Africa. You are doing tremendous work in feeding neighbouring areas,” she said.
She also praised Dr Nchemba’s experience in both agriculture and finance, saying his previous service as Minister of Agriculture and later Minister of Finance gave Tanzania an advantage in addressing development challenges.
Additionally, she stated that IFAD will continue financing projects aimed at reducing hunger and poverty by investing in rural communities, improving their access to markets and strengthening the climate resilience of their livelihoods.
The Borlaug Dialogue, which began on October 20, brings together stakeholders to discuss global food security and agricultural development.
