Amazon has introduced a redesigned Kindle generation for 2026, but its compact 2024 Kindle still deserves consideration if you want to spend more time reading and less time looking at your phone. Weighing just 158g, with a sharp 6-inch display and weeks of battery life, it remains a practical everyday e-reader for UAE residents. Its appeal is straightforward: you can carry a substantial book collection without carrying the books themselves. The important question is whether the older Kindle offers enough value now that Amazon has introduced a lighter, faster successor. For readers who find it at a worthwhile discount, the answer could still be yes.
Key facts
Best for: Commuters, travellers and everyday readers
Bottom line: A compact, capable e-reader that makes most sense at a meaningful discount against the 2026 model
What you get
The Amazon Kindle (2024) is an 11th-generation e-reader designed primarily for reading digital books. Its 6-inch E Ink screen has a resolution of 300 pixels per inch, with a glare-free surface that resembles printed paper more closely than a conventional phone or tablet display.
Amazon lists the device at 158g, with dimensions of 157.8 x 108.6 x 8mm. It is available in Black and Matcha Green.
The Kindle includes 16GB of internal storage, enough for thousands of typical text-based e-books. Some storage is reserved for the operating system. Books can be downloaded through Wi-Fi and accessed offline once stored on the device.
An adjustable white front light illuminates the display in dim environments. Readers can also select dark mode, change font sizes, adjust text layout and bookmark their place. Unlike models with adjustable warm lighting, this Kindle uses white illumination.
Amazon quotes up to six weeks of battery life, based on 30 minutes of reading daily, wireless connectivity switched off and the light set to level 13. Actual endurance depends on reading habits and settings.
Charging is through USB-C. The device also supports Amazon's Kindle reading ecosystem, including compatible personal documents sent using Send to Kindle.
How it performs in everyday life
Portability is the strongest reason to consider the 2024 Kindle. At 158g, it adds little weight to a work bag, making it convenient for someone travelling between Dubai and Abu Dhabi or taking the Metro to work. Rather than reaching for a phone during a short journey, readers can open a book and continue where they stopped.
The display is another advantage, particularly in the UAE. E-Ink uses reflected ambient light, so text remains readable in bright conditions without requiring the kind of screen brightness associated with a smartphone. This makes the Kindle suitable for reading beside a sunny apartment window or while sitting outdoors during the cooler months.
Indoors, the adjustable front light allows reading in a dim bedroom without switching on a separate lamp. Its compact dimensions also make one-handed reading practical while relaxing on the sofa.
In its independent review, TechRadar reported improved responsiveness over the previous Kindle, with smooth page turns and minimal display ghosting. The publication also praised the brighter front light, although it found that newer E-Ink panels offered greater contrast.
The battery is particularly useful for travel. Someone flying out of Dubai for a holiday can load several books before departure and avoid making the Kindle another device that needs charging every evening.
The compact screen is best suited to novels and other text-heavy books. Readers who regularly use illustrated textbooks, large PDFs or comics may prefer a larger display. For ordinary reading, however, the 6-inch format remains highly practical.
What we like
Lightweight 158g design: Convenient for daily commutes, handbags and cabin luggage.
Sharp 300ppi E Ink display: Clear text with a glare-free surface suited to bright UAE conditions.
16GB storage: Enough capacity for a substantial collection of text-based e-books.
Adjustable lighting and long battery life: Flexible reading at home and less frequent charging when travelling.
Does the 2026 Kindle change the buying decision?
Amazon's new Kindle generation introduces meaningful refinements. According to the company's October 2026 announcement, the updated 6-inch Kindle features a redesigned flush-front display, a lighter body and book opening that is 30 per cent faster than the previous release.
TechRadar reports that the new standard model weighs 140g, compared with 158g for the 2024 version. Both offer 16GB storage and a claimed six weeks of battery life.
For a first-time buyer, the newer Kindle deserves attention, especially because Amazon has confirmed its availability in the UAE. The 2024 model becomes more attractive when its live Amazon.ae price is meaningfully lower.
The older device still handles the essential job of reading digital books. A discount, rather than the promise of additional features, is what could make it the smarter purchase.
Who should buy this Kindle?
The 2024 Kindle suits readers who want a dedicated device for novels, biographies and everyday reading. It is particularly appealing to commuters, frequent travellers and UAE residents looking to make reading part of their evening routine without relying on a smartphone.
It also makes sense for someone purchasing their first e-reader and wanting a straightforward introduction to Amazon's Kindle ecosystem.
Readers who prefer a larger screen, adjustable warm lighting or waterproofing should consider other Kindle models. Those choosing between the 2024 and 2026 standard Kindles should compare their live prices before deciding.
Still worth buying, provided the price makes sense
The Amazon Kindle (2024) remains a capable little e-reader in 2026. Its lightweight design, sharp display and generous storage cover the essentials, while the adjustable front light and long battery life make it easy to fit reading into daily life.
For UAE residents, its portability is especially appealing. It can accompany a commute, sit beside the bed or travel in a small cabin bag without taking up much space.
The arrival of the 2026 Kindle changes the value calculation, though. Amazon's newer model is lighter and faster, making it the more sensible option when prices are close.
Choose the 2024 Kindle if you find a worthwhile saving. Its greatest attraction is still the simple pleasure of having your next book ready whenever you have a few minutes to read
