Graphic artist Ruta Kreica (11.09.1946.-20.10.2026.) has passed away, the Latvian Artists' Union has announced.
Ruta Kreica came from an artistic family, as her foster father's brother was the painter Stanislavs Kreics (1909-1992), but from her mother the artist inherited a respect for literature, which later manifested itself in illustrating books herself.
Ruta Kreica became involved in the cultural activities of her time – she participated in the amateur theater ensemble "Rīgas Pantomime" and the gathering place of creative people in the cafe "Kaza".
Ruta Kreica studied at the J. Rozentals Riga Art Secondary School (JRRMV) from 1958, graduating in 1965 and then worked in the theatrical ensemble "Rīgas Pantomime" of the former Construction Workers' Cultural House "Oktobris", which was popular among young people in the 1960s and 1970s, and was then led by Roberts Ligers, an actor from the J. Rainis Dailes Theatre (now Dailes Theatre).
From 1972, Ruta Kreica studied at the Teodors Zaļkalns Academy of Arts in the Department of Graphics. During her studies at the LMA, in 1977, Ruta Kreica, along with Andrejs Ģērmanis, participated in the Mazirbe boarding school children's drawing activities - Andris Grīnbergs' open lesson and a drawing competition, which was organized to create plot sketches for the animated film by director Roze Stiebra (1942-2024) of the creative association "Telefilma-Rīga" based on a script by Vitauts Ļūdēns. Rita Kreica graduated from the LMA Department of Graphics in 1978 with her diploma thesis "My Friends" (in etching technique), supervised by Gunārs Krollis.
From 1985, Ruta Kreica was a teacher at Mazirbe Boarding School. Ruta Kreica's works are in the Museum of the Latvian Artists' Union, the Latvian National Museum of Art, other museums and private collections.
Our condolences to her friends and family.
