(ANSA) - ROME, 12 OTT - President Sergio Mattarella warned against allowing differences to weaken Italy's national unity as he addressed an event celebrating the 80th anniversary of the CIDA confederation of executives and high-level professionals.
"Your role as part of the fabric of the Republic has entailed paying a high price," the head of State said.
"This happened during the era of terrorism, when the Red Brigades targeted some executives in an attempt to dismantle the foundations of our way of life.
"Italy would defeat terrorism thanks to its civic values and its unity. That fundamental unity must not be allowed to dissipate, even when bitterness and substantive disagreements take centre stage".
The temperature of the political debate in Italy is currently on the rise ahead of the next general election, which is set to take place in 2027.
During his speech, Mattarella also highlighted the importance of the European Union for its member States to be able to address the challenges of the modern world.
"Europe is the dimension, the space in which to define ourselves and take action," he said.
"Awareness of this reality is essential for strengthening the European social model that no one intends to abandon—and institutions must make consistent decisions to uphold this".
