The United Serbia electoral list represents a coalition led by the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and includes candidates from the Serbian Radical Party (SRS), alongside several minor partner parties. Friday’s rally marks the ruling party’s first major gathering in the Vojvodina capital since the tragic Novi Sad railway station canopy collapse on November 1, 2024, which claimed 16 lives.
This Friday’s rally comes after at least eight announcements by former Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic over the past two years that he would visit Novi Sad.
Since the canopy collapse at the railway station, Vucic has visited Novi Sad only twice. His first visit was on November 5, 2024, on the night of the riots in the city, when he addressed his supporters outside the SNS local headquarters. He returned to Novi Sad in February of this year, when he was seen eating a sandwich near the fairgrounds alongside the SNS party leader.
A major Serbian Progressive Party rally in Novi Sad had originally been announced for September, but Vucic postponed it, claiming that “people’s lives are what matters most.”
The student movement, alongside local community assemblies and activists in Novi Sad, urged citizens to stay away from the SNS Friday rally.
“Novi Sad no longer owes anyone any proof of its courage,” the Student List stated.
It said that they have received serious warnings regarding pre-planned provocations, staged incidents, and orchestrated violence during and after the rally, which would then be attributed to students and citizens.
