Former NBA champion Jason Williams criticized Philadelphia 76ers guard VJ Edgecombe for saying representing the Bahamas at the Olympics would matter more to him than winning an NBA championship. His remarks come as Philadelphia enters the season with championship expectations, with Edgecombe having previously declared a championship-or-bust mentality.
Williams strongly disagreed with Edgecombe’s priorities, arguing that professional players should place greater importance on the organizations paying their salaries.
“The motherf**kers that are paying me my check means way more to me than them,” Williams said in comments on his Hoopin’ N Hollerin’ podcast in response to the young guard’s Olympic ambitions.

Edgecombe recently explained that helping the Bahamas qualify for the Olympics would carry enormous personal significance. The 21-year-old believes representing his country on basketball’s biggest international stage could inspire future generations.
The Bahamas has never qualified for the Olympic men’s basketball tournament, making such an achievement particularly meaningful for Edgecombe.
During a conversation with teammate Jaylen Brown, Edgecombe acknowledged that his preference might surprise fans but emphasized the impact Olympic participation could have on his country.
His comments contrast with William’s perspective, which places greater emphasis on delivering championships for the NBA franchise employing him.
However, Edgecombe’s international ambitions do not necessarily mean he lacks commitment to Philadelphia’s championship aspirations.
The second-year guard is preparing for another significant campaign after an impressive rookie season. He has also addressed his role alongside Philadelphia’s established stars.
With LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey surrounding him, Edgecombe faces substantial expectations entering the 2026-27 season.
William’s criticism highlights how differently players can value NBA championships and international representation, especially when competing for a country still seeking its first Olympic appearance.
