A madrasah in Savar has filed a counter-case naming the complainant in a rape case involving a 13-year-old student and five others, accusing them of vandalism and looting, police said.
Mohammad Umair, son of madrasah headteacher Mohammad Abdul Bari, filed the case with Savar Model Police Station late Friday night (23 October), naming six people and accusing another 10 to 15 unidentified individuals.
The counter-case comes after Bari, the owner and headteacher of Tohfatul Janna Women's Madrasah in Birulia Union, was accused of raping a fifth-grade student at the institution on Wednesday (21 October).
After the allegation became public, angry locals surrounded the madrasah that evening. When a team from the Birulia police outpost arrived, residents reportedly trapped the officers inside the institution.
Several teams from Savar Model Police Station later reached the scene and rescued Bari's wife and son around 8:45pm, taking them to the police station. After police left, local residents carried out a second round of vandalism at the madrasah.
That night, the victim's grandfather filed a rape case against Bari and his wife, Mosammat Tohfa, 40. Police arrested Tohfa as the second accused and sent her to court the following day. Bari has remained absconding since the incident.
Confirming the counter-case, Mosharraf Hossain, investigation officer at Savar Model Police Station, told The Business Standard that the case had been filed against those allegedly involved in the mob incident.
According to the complaint, the accused attacked and vandalised the madrasah and the complainant's adjoining residence over previous enmity. They allegedly looted Tk47 lakh in cash and 12 bhori of gold ornaments, causing total losses estimated at Tk77 lakh.
The allegations in the counter-case have yet to be independently verified.
