The Coast Guard's West Zone in Mongla has rescued four fishermen held hostage by the notorious Samrat gang in the Sundarbans.
The rescued fishermen are Moinur, 50, Badsha Gazi, 39, Sujon Hossain, 34, and Imamul Mollik, 22. All four are residents of Paikgachha upazila in Khulna district.
Their handover to their families is underway, but no one was arrested during the operation, said Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon in a press release today (12 October).
He said the Coast Guard received confidential information that the Samrat gang was operating near the Arbania canal, beside the Shibsa River in the Sundarbans, within the jurisdiction of Dacope Police Station in Khulna.
Acting on the information, the Coast Guard's Nalian outpost conducted a special operation in the area at 2pm on 11 October and rescued the four fishermen from the gang's custody.
The gang members fled into the forest, leaving the hostages behind, after sensing the Coast Guard's presence. As a result, no one was arrested.
During preliminary questioning, the fishermen said they had gone to the Sundarbans on 10 October to catch fish and crabs when members of the Samrat gang abducted them. The gang held them hostage and tortured them in an attempt to extort a ransom.
