Nigerian passport holders can travel to several countries where they can obtain a visa upon arrival, eliminating the need to secure a conventional visa from an embassy before departure.
The destinations span Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the Pacific, offering options for Nigerians planning holidays, business trips and other short visits.
A visa on arrival (VoA) allows eligible travellers to obtain a visa at an authorised airport, seaport or border crossing. However, the facility does not automatically guarantee entry, as immigration officials may require supporting documents and evidence that visitors meet the country’s entry conditions.
According to VisaChecker’s September 2026 data, 14 destinations offer visa-on-arrival access to Nigerian passport holders. Passport Index also identifies several destinations under this category, although the figures reported by different databases vary.
Here are 14 countries Nigerians can consider when planning international trips.

Burundi, an East African country known for its mountainous landscapes and Lake Tanganyika, offers Nigerian passport holders a visa-on-arrival option.

2. Comoros
Comoros, an island nation in the Indian Ocean off the eastern coast of Africa, is another destination Nigerians can access through a visa-on-arrival arrangement.
Passport Index lists a permitted stay of up to 45 days for eligible Nigerian visitors. Travellers should verify the applicable fees and entry procedures before travelling.
3. Djibouti
Djibouti, located in the Horn of Africa, offers Nigerian passport holders visa-on-arrival and electronic visa options, according to Passport Index.

5. Mauritius
Mauritius is a popular Indian Ocean destination known for its beaches, lagoons and resorts.
Passport Index lists visa-on-arrival access for Nigerian citizens for stays of up to 14 days. Because the permitted period is relatively short, travellers intending to stay longer should establish the appropriate immigration route before booking.
6. Mozambique
Mozambique, located in southeastern Africa, offers Nigerian passport holders a visa-on-arrival option.
Passport Index lists a maximum stay of up to 30 days. Visitors should confirm the conditions attached to the facility and ensure they have the necessary travel documents before departure.

Lebanon, on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, is another destination listed as offering visa-on-arrival access to Nigerian passport holders.
Passport Index lists a stay of up to 30 days. Additional requirements may apply, and travellers should confirm their eligibility directly with Lebanese authorities or the relevant diplomatic mission before departure.
10. Maldives
The Maldives offers a 30-day tourist visa on arrival to visitors of all nationalities, subject to immigration requirements.
According to the Maldives Immigration Service, tourists do not need pre-approval for this visa. However, visitors must have a machine-readable passport with at least one month of validity, confirmed return or onward tickets, a prepaid booking at a registered tourist facility and sufficient funds, or an approved sponsorship arrangement.
Travellers must also complete the required Traveller Declaration electronically within 96 hours before arrival. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee admission, which remains subject to immigration clearance.
11. Timor-Leste
Timor-Leste, a Southeast Asian country occupying the eastern part of Timor island, offers visa-on-arrival access to eligible visitors.
The country’s tourism information states that tourists arriving at Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport in Dili can generally obtain a 30-day visa on arrival for US$30.

Travellers should confirm the latest entry conditions, available entry points and any documentation requirements with the relevant authorities before booking flights.
What Nigerians should know before travelling
Although a visa on arrival can make international travel more convenient, it does not mean a traveller can board a flight without preparation.
Nigerian passport holders should take the following steps before travelling:
1. Confirm eligibility. Check the destination’s official immigration website or contact its embassy to establish whether Nigerian ordinary passport holders qualify for a visa on arrival.
2. Check passport validity. Many countries require passports to remain valid for at least six months, although the rules differ by destination.
3. Prepare supporting documents. These may include confirmed return tickets, accommodation bookings, evidence of sufficient funds and details of the purpose of the visit.
4. Check entry points. Some countries issue visas on arrival only at designated international airports or seaports. Arriving through an unapproved border crossing could require a different visa arrangement.
5. Confirm fees and payment methods. Visa fees and accepted payment methods vary. Travellers should establish the exact amount and whether cash is required before departure.
6. Check for additional authorisation. Some destinations require an electronic declaration, registration or advance authorisation even when a visa is issued on arrival.
7. Confirm requirements with the airline. Airlines may check a passenger’s eligibility and travel documents before boarding. Travellers should verify the applicable rules before purchasing non-refundable tickets.
Visa policies can change, and immigration officers retain the authority to refuse entry when a traveller does not meet the applicable conditions.
Nigerians should therefore verify the latest requirements directly with the destination country’s immigration authorities before making final travel arrangements.
