After clashes and heated arguments between the cadres of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) on first two days, the nomination process was carried out peacefully amid tight police security across five mandals – Gudur Rural, Chittamur, Vakadu, Kota and Chillakur – of Gudur constituency on Friday.
According to sources, TDP candidates submitted 32 nominations in the five mandals, while only one YSRCP candidate filed a nomination in Chittamur by the end of Thursday. YSRCP State Secretary Pernati Shyam Prasad Reddy accused the police of using batons against women. He expressed deep concern over the conduct of the police, claiming that obstacles are being placed at every step to prevent them from filing their nominations.
YSRCP leaders Papareddy Rajashekhara Reddy and Enugu Pushpa, who were preparing to file their nominations as MPTC candidates for Nellipudi Kondapuram in Vakadu mandal respectively, have alleged that “false cases have been filed against them”.
Gudur YSRCP In-charge B. Guravaiah claimed that the YSRCP candidates have suffered police attack. He also wrote letters to Nellore District Collector Himanshu Shukla and Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr. Ajitha Vejendla complaining against the police.
Responding to the allegations by YSRCP leaders, Ms. Ajitha Vejendla said that candidates from all political parties were allowed to file nominations without any fear. Police personnel have responded immediately to any obstacles and followed the regulations impartially, she said.
Based on the direction from the State Election Commission (SEC), the District Collector also instructed the police officials to immediately look into any complaints received from the individuals regarding the obstruction of the filing of nominations.
Speaking to The Hindu, Gudur MLA Pasam Sunil Kumar said, “The YSRCP candidates have provoked the TDP workers, which led to an exchange of words at a few places, but no violence took place in the constituency. Moreover, I have conducted a meeting with the cadre and urged them to maintain peace during the nomination filing process.”
