The Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS) recently recorded a historic milestone in global cancer control as a distinguished Nigerian paediatrician, cancer advocate, and founder of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, assumed office as president of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) for the 2026–2028 term.
A statement made available to newsmen in Abuja Tuesday by the president/CEO Nigerian Cancer Society, Prof. Abidemi Omonisi, noted that Shinkafi-Bagudu’s inauguration marks a significant moment for Nigeria, Africa and the global cancer community, as she becomes the first African and Nigerian to lead UICC, one of the world’s leading international organisations dedicated to advancing cancer control.
The statement said the society recognises the achievement as a source of national pride and a call to renewed action.
Dr. Shinkafi-Bagudu’s presidency, the statement added, presents an opportunity to deepen global partnerships, strengthen cancer advocacy across Africa, and promote greater equity in cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and supportive care.
The statement reads further: “Dr. Shinkafi-Bagudu’s emergence represents the culmination of years of dedicated service, strategic leadership, and tireless advocacy for equitable access to cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and care.”
