Manchester City maintained their perfect Premier League record with a 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town at the Etihad Stadium, although a late penalty ensured an uncomfortable finish for Enzo Maresca’s side.
Phil Foden opened the scoring before Daizen Maeda equalised just over two minutes later. Erling Haaland then scored either side of half-time to put City in control, with Zian Flemming’s late penalty reducing the deficit as the league leaders made it seven wins from seven.
As it happened
City controlled possession from the opening stages but initially found Ipswich difficult to break down. Rúben Dias twice tested goalkeeper Christian Walton from distance before the hosts eventually went ahead in the 19th minute.
Manchester City winger Jérémy Doku drove into the penalty area from the left and found midfielder Phil Foden, who finished first time beyond Walton. It was Foden’s first Premier League goal in 23 appearances.
Ipswich responded only 135 seconds later. Wing-back Abdoul Ouattara released Daizen Maeda down the right channel, and the Ipswich attacker beat defender Marc Guéhi to the ball before finishing past Gianluigi Donnarumma at the near post.
City restored their advantage in the 34th minute. Manchester City midfielder Mateo Kovačić created space on the right and delivered into the area, where Erling Haaland powered a header past Walton for his seventh league goal of the season.
Ipswich continued to pose a threat on the counter after the break, but City came close to extending their lead when Nico O’Reilly headed narrowly wide from Foden’s corner.
Haaland eventually added his second in the 69th minute. Manchester City winger Iliman Ndiaye found the Norwegian inside the area, and Haaland finished with his left foot to give the hosts a two-goal cushion.
City appeared to be heading towards a comfortable finish, but Ipswich were handed a route back into the game late on. Flemming converted from the penalty spot to make it 3-2 and set up a tense closing period.
Ipswich were unable to find another goal, however, as City held on to secure a seventh consecutive Premier League victory and preserve their 100% start to the campaign.
