The Election Commission (EC) began a meeting this morning (12 October) to finalise the dates for local government elections, with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin chairing the meeting at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka's Agargaon.
According to the agenda, the meeting will discuss the election schedule for local government bodies. It will also discuss the delegation of administrative and financial powers to officials of the National Identity Registration Wing.
Election commissioners Brigadier General (retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah, Abdur Rahmanel Masud, Begum Tahmida Ahmed and Md Anwarul Islam Sarker, among others, are attending the meeting.
On Thursday (8 October), Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah said the commission would finalise the dates for union parishad elections at today's meeting.
He said the commission would decide how many phases the elections would be held in and when each phase would take place.
The EC would not announce the election schedules; instead, district election officers will announce them at the field level, Sanaullah said.
He added that the commission hoped to complete all phases within the timeframe announced earlier.
