The New York Yankees have some decisions to make with their roster heading into the offseason.
With how badly the Yankees' playoff run ended, they could look to shake up their roster a bit this winter. One specific Yankees trade candidate who should be watched closely during the offseason is pitcher Luis Gil. Questions about the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year's future with the Yankees have come up often since the regular season.
Now, Gil is being connected to an AL West team.
In a recent article for Bleacher Report, Kerry Miller named Gil as a prime trade target for the Texas Rangers this offseason.
"Even ignoring that 2028 dilemma, though, they could really use another arm for 2027, as they don't have a single returning pitcher (even including that big three) who made at least six starts with a sub-4.20 ERA in 2026. The Yankees sure do have a surplus of starting pitchers, though, and would probably be willing to part with the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year," Miller wrote about the Rangers. "Prime Target: New York's Luis Gil (three years of arbitration eligibility, estimated at $2.3M in 2027)."

...
With the Rangers needing pitching help, it makes sense that they are being connected to Gil. If he bounced back, he would have the potential to be a strong addition to Texas' starting rotation. This is especially so when noting that he would be more than a one-year rental for the Rangers.
Gil appeared in just nine games this season for New York due to injury, where he had a 1-2 record and a 4.61 ERA. However, when noting that he had a 15-7 record and a 3.50 ERA in 29 games as a rookie in 2024, he could turn things back around on a team like the Rangers. He also had a 4-1 record and a 3.32 ERA in 11 games for New York in 2025, so he has had multiple solid years.
Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if the Yankees and Rangers strike a deal involving Gil this offseason. Whether it's the Rangers or another team, the Yankees could use Gil as a valuable trade chip this offseason.
