TAIZ— The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that at least 600,000 people in the Yemeni city of Taiz, the country's third-largest city, are at risk of hunger and malnutrition as ongoing fighting continues to disrupt humanitarian operations and cut off access to essential assistance.
According to a report by the Associated Press, humanitarian organizations have lost the ability to deliver food aid to vulnerable residents who depend on assistance for survival amid a siege imposed by the Houthi group on the city.
The report said that major roads leading into Taiz are currently closed, further restricting the movement of aid supplies and limiting access for humanitarian workers seeking to reach populations in need.
The WFP warned that the disruption of food assistance could have severe consequences for hundreds of thousands of civilians, particularly displaced families, children, and other vulnerable groups facing deteriorating living conditions.
The humanitarian situation has worsened following recent military developments in the governorate. On October 12, the Iran-backed Houthi group announced that it had taken control of several areas in Taiz province after government forces withdrew from those locations.
The latest escalation has raised concerns among aid agencies about the potential for further displacement and a deepening food crisis in a region already struggling with years of conflict and economic hardship.
International humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned that continued hostilities and restrictions on access threaten to exacerbate food insecurity across Yemen, where millions of people remain dependent on aid and basic services for survival.
