Ohio's former SeaWorld site to reopen as park today, first 9 acres ready

After years of lying abandoned, a 48-acre site in Ohio that was once home to SeaWorld and Six Flags amusement parks is opening to the public again, but this time as a recreation space rather than an entertainment destination filled with rides and attractions that it once used to be.

Aurora Park at Geauga Lake is opening its first section on October 25, bringing visitors back to a property that was once a popular family destination in Northeast Ohio, with a restored pier, historic gatehouse pavilions and landscaped lawns forming part of the new park. The city acquired the lakefront property in December 2024 for $5.3 million, several years after the last attraction on the site, Wildwater Kingdom, closed in 2016.

Since then, plans have been underway to make the lakefront accessible to the public again, with the first phase focusing on outdoor recreation and the restoration of some structures from the site's amusement park years. A playground, public beach and other recreational facilities are expected to follow in later phases.

What visitors can expect at Aurora Park

The first phase of the project focuses on making the lakefront accessible to the public again, with seating and picnic areas, restrooms, boating access and a pier offering views of Geauga Lake.

According to News 5 Cleveland, the initial nine-acre section also includes kayak and boat access ramps, while the restored structures and preserved objects from the site's amusement park years are set to provide a nostalgic reminder of its earlier identity. Some of these features are particularly significant for visitors who remember their childhood days at the park and its attractions. The two former SeaWorld gatehouse pavilions have been restored, and memorabilia from the Geauga Lake amusement park years is being incorporated into the new public space.

The city is also planning an accessible play area for a subsequent phase, while future development could include a public beach, a pool house, sports facilities and an amphitheatre. However, the reopening does not mean that the former amusement park rides or SeaWorld's marine animal shows are returning. Instead, the redevelopment is intended to create a community space where people can enjoy the lake, take part in outdoor activities and revisit a location that holds memories for many residents of Northeast Ohio.

From to Six Flags: The site's history

The property has a long history as an entertainment destination for local families, with Geauga Lake becoming a popular amusement destination long before the modern theme parks that later occupied the surrounding land were developed. SeaWorld Ohio opened on the lakefront in 1970, bringing marine animal attractions and shows to the area before the two attractions became part of a larger amusement park operation.According to Spectrum News 1's report on the redevelopment, the area was home to several attractions over more than a century, including Geauga Lake, SeaWorld and Wildwater Kingdom. SeaWorld closed in 2000, and the site subsequently became part of Six Flags Worlds of Adventure. The wider amusement park property later passed through different ownership, with Geauga Lake's rides eventually shutting down in 2007.Wildwater Kingdom, the last amusement attraction operating on the site, closed in 2016, leaving the property vacant and inaccessible to the public. Its closure marked the end of an era for a location that had once drawn families to the lakefront.

Why Aurora bought the abandoned lakefront property

The move to transform the property into a public park followed years of planning and discussions about the future of the lakefront. In its 2024 Year in Review, the City of Aurora described acquiring Geauga Lake and the adjacent land as a way to preserve public access to the water and develop a recreation space for future generations. The city completed the purchase on December 20, 2024, acquiring the lake and approximately 48 acres of surrounding lakefront property for $5.3 million, according to News 5 Cleveland. The acquisition was intended to protect the lakefront from other forms of development while giving residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy the natural surroundings.Construction on the site began in 2026 after planning and design work, with a $12 million bond helping finance the first phase of redevelopment.

The project is being developed in stages, allowing the city to make the property accessible while continuing work on additional facilities in later phases.

A beach and playground are planned for future phases

The opening of Aurora Park represents only the beginning of the city's plans for the property, with additional recreational facilities expected to be developed over the coming years. As reported by Spectrum News 1, the next phase is expected to include a large playground, while a public beach and pool house are planned for a later stage, potentially by 2028.Other proposals include converting the former wave pool into a regular swimming pool, along with sports courts, playing fields, a climbing area and an amphitheatre. These facilities are part of a broader vision to make the lakefront useful to the community beyond the opening of the first section. For now, the restored pier, lawns and gatehouses mark the return of public access to a property that spent years standing largely unused. While Aurora Park will look different from the amusement parks that once occupied the site, the redevelopment offers the city a chance to preserve a piece of local history while creating a new place for families to gather and enjoy Geauga Lake.
