Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday paid tribute to police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty, recalling the sacrifice of 10 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel during a clash with Chinese troops in Ladakh in 1959.
Addressing the National Police Commemoration Day parade in New Delhi, Shah remembered the October 21, 1959, incident at Hot Springs in Ladakh, where 10 personnel were killed while resisting an attack by Chinese forces. The incident remains central to the annual observance of Police Commemoration Day across the country.
Recalling the events, Shah said the personnel had made the ultimate sacrifice while defending the nation's territory, determined not to allow even an inch of Indian land to fall into foreign hands. He noted that October 21 has been observed as Police Commemoration Day every year in honour of their courage and sacrifice.
The Home Minister also highlighted the challenging nature of police service, pointing out that personnel continue to discharge their duties during festivals and other occasions when people celebrate with their families.
Shah said police officers remain responsible for maintaining internal security, regulating traffic and protecting citizens, often spending important years of their lives away from their families in the service of the nation.
On the occasion, the Home Minister also laid floral tributes at the National Police Memorial in New Delhi, honouring police and security personnel who sacrificed their lives while performing their duties.
The National Police Memorial, located in Chanakyapuri, was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 21, 2018, to recognise the contribution and sacrifices of police personnel in safeguarding the country's security and integrity.
Police Commemoration Day is observed annually on October 21 to remember personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty and recognise the sacrifices made by police forces across the country.
