The decentralized exchanges are combining operations in a bid to capture a larger share of on-chain trading volume.
Aerodrome and Velodrome, two prominent decentralized exchange protocols, have announced a merger that will unify their operations under a single token called AERO. The Block reported the deal on October 22, describing a combined platform that will operate across seven blockchain networks rather than remaining confined to separate ecosystems.
Velodrome, which originally launched on the Optimism network, and Aerodrome, which built its presence on Coinbase's Base network, have each built loyal user bases within the broader Optimism Superchain ecosystem. Both protocols use a similar model built around liquidity incentives and vote-escrowed governance tokens, a structure often referred to as ve(3,3) tokenomics. Merging the two suggests an effort to consolidate liquidity rather than compete for it separately.
Coinfomania reported that Velodrome itself amplified news of the merger, suggesting the announcement came with direct backing from at least one of the two protocols involved rather than through unconfirmed market chatter. That detail matters because mergers in decentralized finance often require community governance votes before taking effect, and public endorsement from a protocol's own channels typically signals the process is moving forward with institutional buy-in from the teams themselves.
Bitcoin.com News framed the merger around a specific ambition: capturing $120 billion in trading volume. That figure, if accurate, would represent a substantial scale for a combined decentralized exchange operating primarily within the Optimism-linked chain ecosystem. Decentralized exchanges have steadily taken market share from centralized platforms over the past several years, aided by improvements in blockchain throughput and lower transaction costs on layer-2 networks.
Expanding to seven blockchain networks also reflects a broader trend among decentralized exchange protocols. Many platforms that once operated on a single chain have moved toward multi-chain deployments to follow liquidity and users wherever they migrate. A unified AERO token across networks would let liquidity providers and traders interact with a single governance and incentive structure, regardless of which chain they use.
The merger comes amid continued competition among decentralized exchanges for both trading volume and total value locked, two metrics widely used to gauge a protocol's relevance. Combining two established platforms could reduce fragmentation of liquidity that often occurs when similar protocols operate in parallel. It could also create a stronger single entity capable of attracting integrations from wallets, aggregators, and other decentralized finance applications.
Market Impact
A merger of this scale could consolidate liquidity that was previously split between two competing protocols, potentially improving trading efficiency for users of the combined platform. If the seven-chain deployment proceeds as described, AERO could become a more widely held governance token across the Optimism Superchain ecosystem and beyond.
The stated target of $120 billion in trading volume signals ambition rather than a guaranteed outcome, and actual volume will depend on user adoption, liquidity migration, and broader market conditions. Token holders of both Aerodrome and Velodrome will likely watch closely for details on how existing holdings convert into the unified AERO token.
The merger represents one of the more significant consolidations among decentralized exchange protocols this year, with further details expected as the integration across seven blockchain networks proceeds.
