Although Solana (SOL) has faced choppy consolidation over the past 30 days through October 19, 2026, the network is preparing to modernize its architecture this week with the AIpenglow consensus upgrade, a major overhaul that removes backend clutter to make room for instant crypto transactions, which could fuel volatility.
The AIpenglow consensus upgrade is planned to go live on mainnet on Wednesday, October 21. This core network transformation will replace Solana’s legacy consensus mechanism with a high-performance Votor protocol, a new hyper-fast system that allows validators to sign off transactions off-chain.
With this upgrade, the network aims to achieve transaction finality, the definitive moment when a cryptocurrency transaction becomes permanent, in 159 milliseconds, down from the current 12.8 seconds.
As of press time, the AIpenglow’s Devnet had achieved a tower vote share, the percentage of the blockchain’s space used by validators to talk to each other, of 0%, based on data Finbold fetched from Solana. Additionally, the Devnet had a reported throughput of 122 transactions per second (tx/s).
Meanwhile, Solana’s mainnet recorded a tower vote share of 70.3% and a throughput of 4,680 tx/s.

Expected impact of Solana’s Alpenglow upgrade
Since the Alpenglow update will move all validator votes entirely off-chain, SOL’s reported transactions per second could drop by about 60%.
At the time of writing, the network had recorded more than 562 billion transactions, as per metrics Finbold fetched from Solana Explorer.

With the recorded transactions on the network exclusively holding actual user data from decentralized applications (Dapps), the increased throughput could improve efficiency. As such, Dapps leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) agents could significantly benefit on Solana.
SOL price performance on Monday
Over the past 30 days, SOL price declined by more than 6%, trading at $105.14 at the time of publication.

Although the crypto asset has been in a choppy consolidation over the past month, this week’s upgrade could catalyze heightened volatility.
