Mazarron once again put itself on the national water sports map as the Puerto Deportivo hosted the King’s Cup (Copa del Rey) powerboat racing championship for the tenth consecutive year on October 10 and 11. The event brought together dozens of competitors from different categories in the bay of Puerto de Mazarron, with races across three categories: Circuit, Rally Jet and Offshore.
Mazarron marks a decade of powerboat racing
The milestone underlines the marina’s established role in Spanish powerboat racing, while the competition also helped boost tourism and support local businesses during the autumn season.
Competitors battle for victories across three categories
Saturday’s Circuit races saw victories for Diego Aguilera in Junior GP0, María Ferrer in GP0 Female and Sandro Aguilera in Jet Ski GP4. Other winners included Paola Bermúdez in GP0 Female Junior, Alejandro Prats in GP4, Kiko Aguilera in GP0, Antonio de Oliveira in GP2 and Francesc Lloret in GP2 Promotion.
Sunday’s Rally Jet competitions produced further winners, with Eduardo Botías taking GP0, Jesús Vega winning GP4 and Jonathan Martín claiming GP3 F2 Atmospheric. Daniel Stiers, Óscar Gutiérrez and Aitzol Arrakistain also secured victories in their respective categories.
Meanwhile, the Offshore races, held in open water, saw Iván Pantoja win GP0, Jordi Bermúdez take GP1 and Cristian Enríquez claim GP2. Rubén Rina, Miguel López and Francisco Prieto completed the list of winners in the remaining categories.
Protecting delicate marine habitats during the championship
Safety and environmental protection were also priorities throughout the weekend. Organisers stressed measures to protect local marine habitats, including placing course buoys in sandy areas to avoid damaging underwater seagrass meadows.
The King’s Cup also coincided with the third edition of the Mazarron Fusion Market trade fair, as well as the Sabor a Puerto gastronomic route. The sporting and commercial activities attracted visitors, supported hospitality and retail businesses, and transformed the Puerto Deportivo into the epicentre of water sports over the weekend on the Costa Calida.
