Lionel Scaloni has agreed to extend his contract as Argentina head coach until the end of the 2030 World Cup, according to Cesar Luis Melo.
Scaloni has ended speculation about his future following an emotionally demanding period leading the national team.
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has reached a full agreement with Scaloni to prolong his stay beyond December 2026, when his former contract was due to expire.
The decision is a significant boost for Argentina as they will retain the coach who led them to the 2022 World Cup and ended the country’s 36-year wait for football’s biggest prize.
He also led them to the final of the 2026 edition, but they lost to Spain.
Scaloni’s future had been uncertain in recent weeks, with questions surrounding his long-term commitment.
Many thought he might want a break from years of intense pressure and the enormous expectations that come with managing one of international football’s most successful nations.
Lionel Messi’s retirement from international football also raised doubts about whether Scaloni would remain to oversee Argentina’s transition into a new era.
However, the agreement ensures that Scaloni will have the opportunity to guide the team through that potentially challenging period and build towards the 2030 tournament.
Since taking charge in 2018, Scaloni has transformed Argentina into a formidable international force, delivering the 2021 Copa America, the 2022 Finalissima and the 2022 World Cup.
The 48-year-old guided the Albiceleste to another Copa America victory in 2024, cementing his place among the country’s most successful managers.
Scaloni has managed 105 Argentina games and has won 81 times (D14, L10).
They have won their last three games since the World Cup final loss to Spain without conceding, scoring 14 times.
His extended contract provides continuity as Argentina prepare for the next stage of their international journey.
