From next year, night trains will run in Mallorca at weekends and on the eve of public holidays.
The Balearic president, Marga Prohens, explained that this is a service demanded “particularly by young people, for whom public transport is a priority”.
“We want you, when you go out, when you go to a concert or a party, to have an alternative to the car, so that you can get home safely on the night train,” she said. She explained that the regional government is promoting a new plan to strengthen the TIB non-mteropolitan bus service with a second injection of 25 million euros scheduled for the final quarter of the year.
The investment will enable 24 more buses on the network, new routes, more frequent services, night buses and the expansion of services requiring advance booking. The president explained that the Regional Government has injected 150 million euros into the TIB’s inter-city transport network, which has enabled 37 buses to be added to the fleet, routes and frequencies to be expanded, and services to be increased by 50 per cent.
She also highlighted the pilot scheme for advance booking for users of the Tarjeta Única on route 203, which connects Puerto Soller–Deya–Valldemossa–Palma, with the aim of prioritising residents who travel out of necessity.
Furthermore, Prohens confirmed that the Regional Government is continuing to make progress on the projects to expand Mallorca’s rail network, as the railway to Llucmajor is currently in the basic design phase and will move into the construction phase once the route and the preliminary study have been approved, in line with the set timetable.
She also confirmed that the railway line to Alcudia will shortly enter its second public consultation phase, with the route finalised following the resolution of objections. Prohens added that the metro line to Son Espases is also currently undergoing public consultation.
She also announced that a contract will be awarded in the coming months for the mobility study for the railway line to Arta and Capdepera, for which a budget of 5 million euros from the eco-tax has already been allocated.
She also highlighted the investments in Palma’s Intermodal Station, where 3.6 million euros have been earmarked for its refurbishment. She said that, “for far too long”, the station had become a symbol of “degradation and a lack of safety”, after the Intermodal station had “witnessed some of the darkest chapters of the previous parliamentary term”.
