It is planned to introduce the State Defence Service (VAD) into the State Border Guard from 2028, as announced by Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs (United List) following a conceptual decision taken during the closed part of Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, LSM.lv reports.
It is envisaged that the Ministry of the Interior will collaborate with the Ministry of Defence on the introduction of the VAD within the Border Guard, including the resources actually required and the additional financial resources needed by each of the institutions involved.
The state budget bill will consider the additional funding required to introduce the VAD within the Border Guard, in accordance with the state budget’s financial capacity.
Introducing defence service within the State Border Guard would strengthen border protection capabilities while also giving young people the opportunity to undertake national defence service by becoming practically involved in protecting Latvia’s borders, the Ministry of the Interior commented.
