Ever since the Pirates lost a one-score game to Forks two weeks ago, they knew what needed to be done in order to salvage their playoff hopes. Go 3-0, keep improving and see what happens.
Safe to say, Adna has responded.
Spurred by big plays from Landen Cline and 30 unanswered points over the final three frames, the Pirates triumphed over arch rival Napavine 38-6 on Friday night in a massive C2BL West contest.
"Our kids played really hard. Had a really good practice week and came with good focus," their head coach Aaron Cochran said. "Happy for them."
It now sets up quite the Week 9 in the league. On a short week to boot, Adna will take on Ilwaco while Napavine battles Raymond/South Bend and Forks hosts Pe Ell/Willapa Valley. If the top-three teams all win, it will result in a three-way coin toss.
Adna can win the league outright with a win and a Forks loss. Napavine will need a victory and an Adna loss to be the No. 1 team.
"That is the most important thing, focusing on Adna getting better," Cochran said. "You got to respond after an emotional game this week. I know that's our kids' focus, we have to keep getting better."
The corkscrew came off when Trevin Salme found Cline for a 72-yard touchdown 13 seconds into the second quarter. Beau Miller finished the deal with three rushing scores, one in each of the last three quarters, all from under 10 yards out.
Cline had just two carries and three catches, but finished with 183 total yards. Miller added 76 yards rushing while Salme was 12-for-18 with 228 yards and two TDs. Grayson Humphrey hauled in four catches for 75 yards and the game's first score.
Defensively, the Pirates (6-2, 3-1 C2BL West) held Napavine to 4.5 yards per carry and under 275 yards of total offense. It's the second time the Tigers have been held to under double digits this season.
Cochran's defensive group had 58 total plays on Friday.
"The big thing is pursuit. It is an effort thing and a focus thing," Cochran said. "I thought we did better (on tackling)."
On the other sideline, Napavine head coach Josh Fay was left stunned. He called it "day and night" from last week to this week and he shouldered the blame.
"That was as flat as we've been, not even close," Fay added. "I've got to figure it out."
The Tigers (5-3, 3-1) lone touchdown was from 4 yards out by Dean Hamilton. Quarterback Beckett Landram still put up over 200 yards passing and running plus Carter Edmonds led in receptions with six.
Still, the issues were glaring. Whether it was up front or limiting explosive plays, Napavine unraveled with the opportunity to capture a league title.
"The film doesn't lie on Monday and then we will prepare like our season is on the line," Fay said. "We'll see what happens with everything else."
