Delta New York to Lagos Nonstop Planned for 1 December

NIGERIA · TRAVEL

A filed schedule shows Delta planning a second nonstop from New York to Lagos this winter, an earlier start than first planned. Here is what is confirmed, what is not, and what a US traveller must know before booking.

A schedule summary shows Delta planning a daily nonstop between New York JFK and Lagos, Nigeria, from Tuesday, 1 December 2026. The flight would use the Airbus A330-900neo and sit alongside Delta’s Atlanta service.

For a US traveller bound for Lagos in December, it adds a second US gateway during the busiest weeks of the year. The end date, fares and times are not yet confirmed.

What Delta Has Filed for This Winter

Aviation A2Z summarised Delta’s international schedule changes for winter 2026 on Wednesday, 6 May 2026. Its note says daily A330-900neo service to Lagos begins on 1 December instead of 19 December.

That means the route begins on a Tuesday, 18 days before the original date. The summary gives no end date, and it does not name Nigeria, though LOS is the code for Lagos.

A flight-schedule listing on FlightsFrom shows Delta as the only airline flying the route nonstop. It lists flights from 1 December 2026 into February 2027, but that end date comes from a data aggregator, not from Delta.

The same listing shows an evening departure from New York and a flight time of about ten hours. Treat both as unconfirmed until Delta’s own booking page shows them.

How This Compares With Past Winters

Delta has run a seasonal New York to Lagos flight in recent winters. Its newsroom said in October 2024 that flights would run from 2 December 2024 through 28 March 2025.

BusinessDay, a Nigerian newspaper, reported on 2 December 2025 that the flight would run from 2 December 2025 to 16 January 2026. A Delta manager for West Africa called it an additional nonstop option during the peak period.

The pattern suggests a holiday-season route that ends in winter, not a permanent one. Only Delta can say whether the 2026/27 season will run through January, February or March.

Compare dates carefully, because the earlier start helps travellers heading to Lagos for the first weeks of December. A return in January depends on the end date, which is still open.

The Atlanta Option and the Aircraft

Delta also flies Atlanta to Lagos. Delta’s newsroom said in July 2025 that an A350-900 would replace the older A330-200 from October, adding 35% more seats.

The same July 2025 item put the A330-900neo on the New York flight from 2 December to 16 January. It says both aircraft have Delta One Suites with sliding doors, Delta Premium Select and Delta Main.

Delta said an upgraded lounge for Lagos departures would open on 1 July 2025, run by a third-party provider. It serves Delta One customers and oil and gas clients, so economy travellers should not count on access.

Getting Through Lagos Airport

Nigeria’s airport authority, FAAN, told travellers on 7 October 2026 to arrive three to four hours before departure. Its managing director, Olubunmi Kuku, said she expects a bridge linking Terminals 1 and 2 to open by the December peak.

Work on Terminal 1 is continuing, and FAAN says it will add staff over the holidays. Kuku blamed drop-off congestion on drivers who stop at Level 1 instead of using the upper levels.

FAAN also says the Seymour car park now connects directly to Terminal 2. Confirm your terminal with Delta before you leave, because the bridge opening date is not fixed.

Ebola News and Your Trip

Legit.ng and the Daily Monitor report that Nigeria’s government confirmed one Ebola case in Abuja on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate said the patient, a woman who travelled from Uganda, is isolated and 44 contacts are identified.

Tracers are also seeking passengers on relevant flights, and the government asked them to cooperate fully. The reports checked mention no travel ban, and no airport screening measures were described.

The US health agency CDC lists Ebola travel notices for Congo and Uganda, updated on 15 June 2026. Nigeria does not appear in them, so check the CDC page again before you book.

The case is in Abuja, the capital, and not in Lagos. The NCDC and WHO pages checked on 24 October showed no release on it.

Entry Rules and Safety for US Visitors

The State Department says US citizens must apply for a visa before travel and links the Embassy of Nigeria. Passports must be valid for at least six months beyond arrival and have one blank page per entry stamp.

Yellow fever and polio vaccination certificates are required for travellers over nine months old, and malaria prevention is recommended. Anyone carrying more than US$10,000 in cash must declare it on entry and exit.

The department rates Nigeria Level 3, Reconsider Travel, in an advisory issued on Friday, 12 June 2026. It cites crime, terrorism, unrest, kidnapping and armed gangs, and its country page was updated on 25 June 2026.

Level 4, Do Not Travel, applies to several northern and southern states, and Lagos is not on that list. The department says its ability to give emergency help outside Abuja and Lagos is limited.

The US Consulate General sits in Victoria Island, Lagos. Dual US and Nigerian citizens need a valid Nigerian passport to leave Nigeria.

What It Means for You

If you plan to be in Lagos in early December, a New York departure may beat connecting through Atlanta. Wait for Delta’s booking page to show the dates, times and fares before you pay.

Apply for your visa early and check the CDC and State Department pages again a week before you fly. Allow three to four hours at Lagos airport on the way home.

What Is Not Known

Only Aviation A2Z and the FlightsFrom aggregator back the 1 December start. Delta’s press site, its Lagos page and a second outlet did not confirm it, and the end date and fares are open.

Seat counts for the Lagos service were not confirmed, and Delta’s booking pages could not be checked in this review. The Abuja case was not found on the NCDC or WHO pages checked, and its effect on airlines is not known.

What Comes Next

The first flight is planned for Tuesday, 1 December 2026, and Delta’s booking page is the place to confirm it. FAAN expects the Terminal 1 and 2 bridge by the December peak, but has set no date.
