Multan’s historic Municipal Public Library has been successfully restored and complemented by a contemporary library café, creating a vibrant public space for literature, history, and social engagement.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Member of the Provincial Assembly Salman Naeem, Commissioner Multan Aamir Kareem Khan, Director General of the Walled City Authority Najam-ul-Saqib, industrialist Khawaja Jawad, alongside prominent writers, academics and local dignitaries.
Speaking at the event, MPA Salman Naeem lauded the commissioner’s vision, noting that the combined library and café will offer residents and visitors a unique window into Multan’s cultural identity while preserving the structure’s original architectural integrity.
Commissioner Aamir Kareem Khan said the project originated during a review of restoration works at Qasim Fort, emphasising that revitalising historic landmarks while fostering a reading culture among younger generations remains a key objective.
He revealed that additional recreational amenities, including a food court and craft bazaar, are also in development within the complex.
To support academic pursuits, the commissioner announced a dedicated section for competitive-examination candidates equipped with around 700 books, over 200 of which have already been contributed by philanthropists. A digital catalog is also underway, and officials are considering special concessions for scholars and writers.
Industrialist Khawaja Jawad commended the preservation efforts for maintaining the building’s authentic character, stressing that safeguarding heritage is vital to protecting the city’s historical soul.
During the ceremony, distinguished writers and academics contributed to the library’s collection by personally donating books.
