By Zoila Palma: TikTok Chief Executive Officer Shou Zi Chew is urging users to better understand artificial intelligence (AI) agents before allowing them to carry out tasks on their behalf.
Chew warned that people may be granting these tools broad permissions without fully understanding what they are authorized to do, Business Insider reports.
Chew explained that AI agents given access to credit card information could make unintended purchases while attempting to fulfill a user’s request. He noted that some agents may be overly eager to complete tasks, potentially resulting in actions that go beyond what users intended. He emphasized the importance of understanding the limits of these tools and being mindful of the permissions granted to them.
The TikTok chief also revealed that the company is training employees on the type of information they should avoid sharing in public AI chats, including trade secrets and privileged legal information. During the DBS Asia Future Forward Conference, which focused on using AI to create value across Asia, Chew also discussed his personal use of AI for tasks such as diet coaching and answering medical questions.
AI agents have gained popularity for their ability to automate everyday activities, including bookings, audits and purchases.
However, reports of unintended actions have raised concerns about their reliability and security.
