Washington, D.C.- OAS Secretary General Albert R. Ramdin met Wednesday in Washington with former Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez to discuss democracy in the Americas, including the political situation in Nicaragua.
Ramdin described the meeting as constructive, saying they exchanged views on Nicaragua and reaffirmed his willingness to support efforts by OAS member states regarding the country’s situation.
The two also discussed upcoming elections in Latin America and the importance of maintaining a strong regional commitment to democracy. Ramdin praised Álvarez’s perspective and six years of service as the Dominican Republic’s foreign minister from 2020 to 2026.
Álvarez described the conversation as productive and said he remains willing to contribute to efforts supporting democracy in the Americas.
The meeting comes amid strained relations between the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. In October, the Dominican government announced the closure of its embassy in Managua while conditions affecting freedoms and democratic principles persist.
The decision followed Nicaragua’s closure of its embassy in Santo Domingo in September. In July, the Dominican Republic had also recalled its ambassador from Managua for consultations, citing statements by Nicaraguan authorities that it said were inconsistent with democratic principles and commitments under the inter-American system.
