The Plateau State House of Assembly has adopted the recommendations of its ad-hoc committee in support of the proposed constitutional amendment to establish state police in Nigeria.
The decision was taken during Monday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Naanlong Daniel.
Presenting the committee’s report, its chairman and member representing Qua’an-Pan South Constituency, Prof. Theodore Bala Maiyaki, said the proposed amendment was necessary to address prevailing security challenges, police manpower shortages and the need to strengthen local policing.
The proposed Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, was transmitted to the 36 state assemblies on September 16, 2026, by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, for consideration and approval.
Maiyaki explained that the proposal seeks to establish constitutional frameworks for federal and state police services, with safeguards for human rights, accountability, operational standards and coordination.
He said the committee considered the amendment timely, noting that improved security was essential to the socioeconomic development of Plateau State and the country.
Following deliberations, the House adopted the committee’s recommendations and voted in support of the proposed amendment.
The Speaker commended the committee for its work and thanked lawmakers for their patience and commitment to considering the legislative proposal.
The constitutional amendment requires approval by at least 24 of the 36 state assemblies before it can proceed to the next stage.
Also at the plenary, the House passed first reading two bills: the Plateau State Right of Patients and Medical Institutions Bill, and the Plateau State Bill on Jungle Justice, Mob Action and Other Forms of Unlawful Violence Against Persons.
The assembly subsequently resolved to proceed on recess from October 19 to November 10, 2026.
Daniel appreciated members, support staff and other personnel for their dedication, saying the House had continued legislative duties beyond its initially scheduled recess period to attend to its responsibilities.
The assembly is expected to resume plenary on Tuesday, November 10, 2026.
