Women residents of Sembulichampalayam near Anthiyur staged a road blockade on Wednesday (October 21, 2026), demanding that the dumping of dyeing waste in their locality be stopped. The protest disrupted traffic on the Anthiyur-Bhavani road for 30 minutes.
More than 500 families live in the Pattappan Temple area of Sembulichampalayam. Residents alleged that unidentified persons had been bringing dyeing waste from other areas and dumping it in the locality over the past few days. They said no action had been taken despite their demands to prevent the dumping.
The women gathered on the road on Wednesday morning, bringing traffic to a standstill, with vehicles queuing up on both sides.
On receiving information, Anthiyur Inspector Shanmugavelu and Sub-Inspectors Senthil Lawrence and Ashok Kumar, along with other police personnel, reached the spot. Revenue officials also arrived and held talks with the protesters.
The residents said the locality was home to a large number of children and elderly people and expressed concern over the possible health effects of the waste. They demanded that the dumped waste be removed immediately and that the police intensify surveillance to prevent further dumping.
The officials assured the protesters that the matter would be brought to the attention of higher authorities and appropriate action would be taken. The protest was withdrawn following the talks.
