Cole Palmer and Conor Gallagher came together in a soggy blur on the edge of the box, and, in the moment, no one around Stamford Bridge quite knew who had kicked what. But the reaction of the Tottenham players, rushing to the referee with arms outstretched, faces contorted in faux horror, told you everything you needed to know. Palmer had briefly inserted his studs into Gallagher’s ankle. Chris Kavanagh showed Palmer his second yellow card in seven minutes, and Chelsea’s chances disappeared with their No 10 down the tunnel.
Palmer had already been booked for ramming his thigh into the side of Mateus Fernandes’s head, after the Spurs midfielder deliberately handled the ball to scupper a counter-attack. It was the sort of malice you hear inside your own intrusive thoughts, but Palmer decided to act on them, and he could have been sent off there and then. It sparked a chaotic melee on the pitch and an angry skirmish between the dugouts.
By this point, there were more than 70 minutes on the clock and this sodden game had been petering towards a goalless draw. Spurs had been the better side, dominating possession, territory, chances and shots. Chelsea had been atrocious, sending one in four passes awry, but looked like getting away with it. Yet Palmer’s petulance ignited something and from that moment on, Chelsea crumbled.
Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders was making his first Premier League start, in for the injured Emiliano Martinez, and the 21-year-old made two crucial saves in an excellent first half. But moments after the game erupted around Palmer, he punched Fernandes’s in-swinging corner into his goal to give Spurs the lead, having jumped under minimal pressure. Palmer soon saw red, and Mathys Tel wrapped up a 2-0 victory with a brilliant slalom dribble and piercing finish from the edge of the box.
“We win and we lose together and it’s part of the job to overcome mistakes,” Alonso said, when asked about Penders’ own goal. “We will support Mike. He will learn from that and he will want to prove that he can do better, and we have to show that we can do better.”
Chelsea had only themselves to blame. Even with eleven players, they had been outplayed on their own patch. They became increasingly frustrated and Palmer was a symptom, not the cause. Morgan Rogers lashed out, Jordan Henderson lost his cool, and the same immaturity and ill-discipline which dogged Chelsea last season was evident here.
Yet as poor as Chelsea were, Tottenham fully merited the win on their own terms. Roberto De Zerbi’s team regularly evaded Chelsea’s half-hearted press, enjoyed controlled spells on the ball and created clear sights of goal. Spurs hadn’t won a game all season before this week. Now they have two wins in six days, and – say it quietly – there were the embers here of a genuinely cohesive football team.
In truth, there were only patches of rhythm in a game broken by misjudgements and mistakes on soaking wet pitch. The only one here who could honestly say they delivered for 90 minutes was Storm Boelo, who rained on west London from the first whistle to the last. By half-time no one was wetter than Xabi Alonso, who appeared not to have read the forecast. He did at least emerge for the second half wearing a raincoat, though the real damage had surely been done inside his soft white trainers.
News of Joao Pedro’s absence from Alonso’s line-up surfaced on social media a few hours earlier when online sleuths noticed he had been excluded from the fantasy football teams of some fringe Chelsea staff and others with links to the dressing room. Sure enough, Joao Pedro was out with a knee injury that will require further assessment. Teenaged winger Goevany Quenda came into the side on the left and Rogers took up station in the centre.
Chelsea’s new-look attack pressed Tottenham high and initially forced some misplaced passes from goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, one of which led to a shot by Henderson inside the box, but Kinsky recovered to make the save. Kinsky had earlier made a full-stretch dive to keep out Palmer’s curling effort from nestling in the top corner.
But Spurs had the best chances and should have led at the break. Mohammed Kudus whistled a shot narrowly wide from a tight angle, before Penders made a big save from Omar Marmoush at close range – though judging by De Zerbi’s reaction on the touchline, it was perhaps less a Penders save and more of a glaring Marmoush miss.
Tel had an even better opportunity five minutes later, sent through one on one by Marmoush’s cleverly disguised pass, but Penders rushed out and made himself big enough to block the shot.
A disjointed second half was halted when James Maddison went down with an injury. Monday night’s win over Coventry was Maddison’s first start since May 2025, and he looked disconsolate as he was helped off the field and down the tunnel. The entire game lost a little energy. But Palmer sparked a dormant match to life, and 20 minutes later, Stamford Bridge was almost empty, bar a corner of boisterous Tottenham fans serenading Tel’s magnificent closing goal.
