Here’s the baker who left the Bake Off tent during Dessert Week - and who was named Star Baker.
Self-saucing puddings, bread and butter puddings and other retro desserts were all on the menu in episode five of the Great British Bake Off.
Last night (Tuesday, October 20) was Dessert Week, saw the bakers putting their own spin on some British classics, with one contestant even admitting to using Mary Berry’s recipe over either of this year’s judges Paul Hollywood or Nigella Lawson.
In a Bake Off first, there were staggered start times in the tent so that the signature challenge could be served up straight away for maximum sauciness - or “goo” as Lawson would say. A missed timer almost spelled disaster for one baker, and there was one lucky Hollywood Handshake issued (as well as a few from Gary).
The technical saw the return of the gingham pantry, and while bakers had a basic bread and butter pudding recipe, they had to enhance the classic dish. Finally, the “particularly tricky” - in the words of Hollywood - showstopper required real precision: three different desserts (at least 8 apiece) served on a retro dessert trolley.
But who was able to keep calm and carry on and who couldn’t meet the judges’ expectations?
Who won Star Baker?
Connie earned Star Baker during Dessert Week in the Bake Off tent.
The third baker to start making her signature self-saucing pudding, Connie’s creation was a chocolate orange affair - one of several in the tent. Despite forgetting to set her timer and having a near disaster, her pudding was more than sufficiently saucy.
Lawson said she was “mesmerised” by the sauce, with Hollywood gifting a joyful Connie with the second Hollywood Handshake of the series.
It was then a bread and butter pudding technical, but with a twist. Connie came in second, closely following Gary, with her vanilla, nutmeg and sultana take on the classic.
Then the showstopper. Connie took the judges back in time with a sherry trifle, pear and apple pie and a pineapple upside down cake. She was let down by a lack of custard and some slight overbaking on her cake, but the judges approved overall.
There were other highly rated bakes on the day, with Mo’s mango mousse receiving particular praise, as did Tom’s mojito pavlova, which Nigella even requested the recipe for.

Who left Bake Off last night?
Sadly it was Yannis who left the Bake Off tent during Dessert Week.

He had a rough time in the previous episode, but unfortunately wasn’t able to impress the judges this week. He made an apple strudel self-saucing pudding, pulling from his childhood in Austria, but the judges found them too large and the texture slightly “gummy”.
In the technical, Yannis then came second to last with his hazelnut, chocolate and cherry bread and butter pudding. The judges didn’t hate it, but they found it overwhelmed the dessert.
Then in the showstopper, the paediatric doctor rolled out sticky toffee puddings, black forest gateau and the queen of puddings - a Nigella Lawson favourite - which he used Mary Berry’s recipe for. It was another round of bakes which were off slightly in one way or another which sealed Yannis’ fate.
