Saudi-led coalition intercepts Houthi missile targeting Riyadh

The Saudi-led coalition has reported intercepting and destroying a ballistic missile launched by Houthi forces toward Riyadh. This development is part of ongoing hostilities between the Saudi-led coalition, aiming to restore legitimacy in Yemen, and the Houthi movement. Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki confirmed the interception, marking yet another attempt by the Houthis to strike targets within Saudi Arabia. Despite frequent missile and drone launches, Saudi defenses have reportedly prevented these projectiles from reaching their intended targets, though some debris has caused injuries and minor property damage.

Key Takeaways

• The interception of the Houthi missile suggests ongoing hostilities, which may increase concerns about Saudi airspace security.
• Market pricing indicates a slight increase in the perceived likelihood of a formal closure of Saudi airspace, with a 4.5% YES probability for closure by November 1, 2026.
• The continued missile activity is consistent with scenarios where Saudi authorities might consider further measures to protect airspace and infrastructure.

What to Watch

Markets are closely monitoring developments for indications that could support a YES resolution on Saudi airspace closure. Key factors include further missile attacks, official statements from Saudi aviation authorities, and potential escalation of regional hostilities. The involvement of international bodies like the U.S. FAA and EASA in issuing advisories could also influence market perceptions. Any announcement of a ceasefire or de-escalation between Saudi and Houthi forces could shift expectations toward a NO outcome.
