Plenty of businesses receive thousands of visitors a month and still can’t move the revenue line. Traffic by itself is not profitable. If visitors never turn into customers, or buyers purchase once and vanish, the numbers stay flat. Fixing that gap is the job of a head of growth. They build the plan for bringing in the right customers, lifting sales, and keeping the business healthy over the long run.
The Role in Plain Terms
A head of growth owns the work of getting more customers and more revenue. That spans marketing, product experience, retention, data, and overall strategy. A traditional marketing head tends to stop at ads and leads. Growth leaders follow the whole customer journey, from the first click through repeat purchases and word-of-mouth referrals.
Take a software company with lots of free users and very few paying ones. A growth leader would dig into the signup flow, spot where people drop off, and run tests to make the jump from free to paid easier. The point is to put effort where it will actually change revenue, not wherever it looks busiest.
Main Responsibilities
Goals come first, and they depend on what the company needs right now. Some businesses want more qualified leads. Others want higher sales, cheaper acquisition, better retention, or a foothold in a new market. Product, sales, finance, and customer service all have a hand in these targets, so close coordination with those teams keeps every growth effort connected to a result that matters.
Acquisition is the next big piece. Options include paid ads, search engine optimization (SEO), content, partnerships, email, referrals, and direct sales outreach. Reaching the biggest audience is not the aim. Reaching people who genuinely need the product, and are likely to stick around, is.
Keeping customers deserves equal attention. A growth leader looks at why people leave, fixes the first-use experience, and finds ways to bring buyers back or secure subscription renewals. Done well, this raises customer lifetime value (LTV), the total amount a customer is expected to bring in over the whole relationship.

Skills that Matter
The role sits at the crossing of business judgment, analysis, and leadership. Data work reveals where the funnel leaks, which channels perform, and whether a test succeeded. Comfort with Google Analytics, CRM systems, dashboards, and SQL helps a great deal.
Money skills count too. Customer acquisition cost (CAC) is what the company spends to win one customer. The LTV-to-CAC ratio sets that cost against the customer’s value, and the payback period shows how long it takes to earn the spend back. Together these numbers help decide whether a channel deserves more budget or less.
Strategies for Scaling
Before anything else, the product has to solve a real problem. Customer interviews, reviews, sales feedback, and usage data show what buyers care about most. Once demand is clear, effort can go toward channels that reach the right people.
After that, the path from interest to purchase needs smoothing out. Clear product pages, short signup forms, helpful onboarding, and fair pricing all cut down friction. Small experiments show which changes lift conversion, though each one needs a defined goal and a trustworthy way to measure the outcome.
Artificial intelligence (AI) now speeds up part of this work. Teams use it to analyze feedback, draft ad variations, segment customers, and automate routine tasks. Human review is still necessary, and any major change should trace back to a real customer need or business goal.
Measuring Success
The right scorecard varies by business model. A software firm usually watches monthly recurring revenue (MRR), annual recurring revenue (ARR), churn, and net revenue retention (NRR). An online store cares more about purchase rate, repeat orders, average order value, and profit per customer.
Gross margin, meaning the revenue left after direct costs, deserves a place on that scorecard as well. Rising sales can hide a weak business if each new customer costs too much to win or serve. Reliable data keeps revenue growth balanced against profit and cash needs.
A 90-Day Plan
The first 30 days go to review: customer data, sales results, marketing spend, retention, and the current funnel. Days 31 to 60 are for a small set of tests aimed at the biggest problems found. The last 30 days are for scaling what worked, tightening reports, and setting priorities for the next quarter.

Bottom Line
Rising acquisition costs, shifting customer expectations, and tougher competition make this role more valuable than it used to be. A head of growth takes scattered marketing activity and turns it into one coherent system, linking customer needs to product value, channel choices, dependable data, and sound financial decisions. Lasting growth rarely comes from traffic alone. It comes from attracting suitable customers, earning their trust, and giving them good reason to come back.
