The deputy governor of Zamfara state, Mallam Mani Mummuni, Sunday, narrowly escaped being lynched by angry youths of Gwashi community in Bukkuyum local government area of the state.
He was said to have visited the community to commiserate with them over recent bandits’ attacks that have claimed lives and displaced residents.
Sources said trouble started when aggrieved youths in their hundreds mobilised and began chanting ‘We don’t want you,’ rejecting the deputy governor’s presence in the community.
The situation later turned violent as the angry youths reportedly pelted several vehicles in the deputy governor’s entourage with stones.
A resident of the area who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent that they took the action to show their grievance over alleged neglect by the state government despite the insecurity bedeviling the area.
“We don’t want any support from the state government since they don’t value our lives. Whoever comes to our area, we will do more than what we did to the deputy governor,” the resident said.
It was gathered that the deputy governor who hails from Masamar Mudi in Bukkuyum local government area, was rescued by his security aides who whisked him away immediately the attack started.
As at the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the Zamfara state government or the office of the deputy governor regarding the incident, while normalcy is said to have returned to the area.
