The Philadelphia Phillies moving on from Bryce Harper doesn't really make a whole lot of sense, despite some recent rumors.
According to the latest report from Bob Nightengale, there's a possibility that trading Harper could make sense because of some of the other financial problems the Phillies currently have.
The Phillies are stuck with Trea Turner and a slew of other big contracts that haven't played at the level everyone has hoped for.
“You’d think probably Harper in the sense that Turner doesn’t have that [contract] value,” Nightengale said. “You’d have to eat a lot of that contract to move him. Harper’s contract is very reasonable.”
As for how this could help the Boston Red Sox, I don't think it's crazy to say Harper ending up in Boston would be a perfect outcome for everyone involved.
The Red Sox could use a first baseman, an offensive bat that would light up this lineup, and a completely different kind of fire and passion that most other players in Major League Baseball don't offer.
To get into what Harper has done throughout his career, the nine-time All-Star, Rookie of the Year Award winner, two-time MVP Award winner, and four-time Silver Slugger has been among the best players in baseball history.
He's certainly getting older, turning 34 on Oct. 16, but Harper is still an elite offensive player and proved that throughout the 2026 season with an .865 OPS and a 131 OPS+.
He also led the National League with 107 walks, doubles, and 87 RBIs, and there's reason to believe that he'd be everything that Boston could hope for. Of course, the contract situation would be one to consider, considering that he's on a 13-year, $330 million deal through 2031.
However, for a Red Sox team looking to improve, he's the perfect type of player to pursue, and there are many reasons why.
