Bahamas in Latin America, Its Role, Weight and Alliances

BAHAMAS · LATIN AMERICA

The Bahamas is tiny by population yet loud at the United Nations. Here is its weight, its memberships and its alliances in October 2026.

The Bahamas continent question has a short answer: North America, though the islands sit in Latin American and Caribbean bodies. The country of 403,033 people joined CARICOM in 1983 and sits in CELAC, but not in the Andean Community.

CARICOM is the Caribbean Community, and CELAC is the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States. For a country profile see The Bahamas explained, and for its sea neighbours read The Bahamas and its neighbours in the Caribbean.

For US readers the stakes are tourism, trade and security, since about 85% of visitors come from the United States. More coverage sits on the Rio Times Bahamas page.

The Bahamian dollar is fixed at one per US dollar, a rate the central bank quoted on 20 October 2026. The open.er-api.com rate of the same day (00:02 UTC) agrees.

The Bahamas Continent Question, Answered

The Bahamas is an Atlantic archipelago of 13,939 square kilometres, with its capital at Nassau, the CARICOM secretariat says. Prime Minister Davis said on 19 October 2026 that about fifty miles of water separate its nearest island from Florida.

Geographers place the islands in North America, like the rest of the Caribbean. The World Bank nonetheless groups The Bahamas in its Latin America and Caribbean region and ranks it a high-income country.

The Bahamas became independent from Britain on 10 July 1973. It remains a monarchy under King Charles III, represented by Governor-General Dame Cynthia Pratt.

Culturally it is English-speaking and Commonwealth-minded rather than Spanish or Portuguese. That explains why it looks north to Florida and east to London as much as south to the mainland.

The Bahamas is not a full member of the Andean Community, which lists Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Its regional life runs through the Caribbean, the hemisphere-wide bodies and the Commonwealth.

Population and Economic Weight

The World Bank counted 403,033 Bahamians in 2025, about 0.06% of the 666.6 million people in Latin America and the Caribbean. Brazil has more than 500 times as many.

The economy was worth US$15.8 billion in 2024, the World Bank shows, about 0.2% of the region’s output. The IMF estimates US$17.2 billion for 2025 and US$18.3 billion for 2026.

Income per head is the real strength: the IMF puts it at US$41,728 in 2025. That is about three times Mexico’s US$13,759 and nearly four times Brazil’s US$10,683.

Tourism carries the economy and generates about 70% of GDP, the US Commercial Service says. The Bahamas received about 11.2 million visitors in 2024, roughly 85% of them from the United States.

The central bank held 3.1 billion Bahamian dollars (US$3.1 billion) of external reserves in August 2026. Its discount rate stood at 4.00%.

The IMF projects growth of 2.5% in 2026, after 3.8% in 2025. It expects inflation of 3.8% in 2026, up from 1.1% in 2025, and unemployment of 9.3%.

Who Governs The Bahamas in 2026

Prime Minister Philip Davis and his centre-left Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) won the general election of Tuesday, 12 May 2026. The PLP took 33 of 41 seats with 71,245 votes, about 51%, a Nassau Guardian data column shows.

The Free National Movement (FNM), the centre-right party led by Michael Pintard, won eight seats with 48,863 votes, about 35%. The Coalition of Independents won 17,095 votes, about 12%, and no seat.

Davis was sworn in for a second consecutive term at Government House on Thursday, 14 May 2026, the Tribune in Nassau said. On Monday, 18 May his office published a Cabinet of 21 ministers plus seven ministers of state.

Key posts as of October 2026 are listed below. The names come from the Office of the Prime Minister and the Tribune.

• Deputy Prime Minister: Chester Cooper, who also runs Education, Science and Technology.
• Finance: Michael Halkitis.
• Foreign Affairs and Immigration: Fred Mitchell, who sets the foreign line described below.
• National Security: Myles Laroda.
• Attorney General and Legal Affairs: Wayne Munroe.
• Tourism: Glenys Hanna Martin.

Pintard, the FNM leader, opposed the government’s refinancing of Grand Bahama Power Company debt, the Tribune reported on 19 October 2026. For the state of the economy and the fund scandal behind the headlines, read The Bahamas National Investment Fund explained.

CARICOM, CELAC and the OAS

The Bahamas joined CARICOM on 4 July 1983, and its portfolio among CARICOM leaders is tourism, the secretariat records. The US Commercial Service adds that it is outside the single market and economy, the group’s customs union.

It is one of the 33 member states of CELAC, the region-wide club that excludes the United States and Canada. Uruguay now holds the rotating presidency, which Colombia was to hand over at the Bogotá summit of 21 March 2026.

Saint Lucia sits on CELAC’s leadership troika for CARICOM, Uruguay’s foreign ministry said. The Bahamas’ own delegation at Bogotá is not confirmed in the sources checked.

It also belongs to the Organization of American States, which counts all 35 independent states of the Americas as members. The OAS is the one forum where Nassau sits with Washington, Ottawa and the whole mainland.

Trade ties run through other doors. The Bahamas is party to CARIFORUM trade pacts with the European Union and Britain, and gets US and Canadian Caribbean preferences.

It is not in the World Trade Organization. Its accession working party dates from 18 July 2001, and the US Commercial Service judges entry unlikely before 2030.

Mission networks show the priorities, with Nassau running embassies or missions in Brussels and Geneva. Mitchell said on 19 October 2026 that a mission in Dublin is coming.

Alliances: Washington, Beijing and the Commonwealth

The United States is the main partner by a wide margin. US Census Bureau data show US goods exports to The Bahamas of US$5.98 billion in 2025 and imports of US$2.62 billion.

From January to August 2026, exports were US$3.78 billion and imports US$1.24 billion. The State Department says the US Coast Guard assists Bahamian authorities in coastal defence through Operation Bahamas, Turks and Caicos.

China is the second pole. On Friday, 11 July 2025 The Bahamas and China signed a framework agreement on a concessional loan for a new hospital.

Davis asked Parliament on 3 December 2025 to approve borrowing up to CNY 1.4235 billion (about US$213 million) for the hospital. The lender is the Export-Import Bank of China, and his office gave a dollar equivalent of about US$201 million.

On 27 May 2026 Chinese Ambassador Yan Jiarong met Mitchell and noted the coming 30th anniversary of ties. They also discussed the China-CELAC framework, Haiti, Cuba and China’s bid to host the secretariat of the high-seas treaty.

The Commonwealth is the third. Mitchell cited it on 19 October 2026 as a vital multilateral forum, ahead of the next leaders’ meeting.

The UN is the fourth. The Bahamas joined the UN on 18 September 1973, Davis said, and now seeks a Security Council seat for 2032 and 2033.

It backs Guyana’s Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett to become UN Secretary-General, Davis told the Assembly. It also fields Stephen Bereaux for deputy head of the International Telecommunication Union.

Disputes and Pressure Points

Nassau’s sharpest line is on sovereignty, set out in the UN speech of 25 September 2026. Davis said the Caribbean was somebody’s backyard for 500 years and must not be again.

Mitchell repeated on 19 October that it rejects any return of “backyard” diplomacy. His ministry’s release did not name a country.

On Cuba, The Bahamas again presses for change. Davis called for lifting the “strengthened blockade”, ending the fuel blockade and removing Cuba from the “unilateral list” of alleged terrorism sponsors.

Haiti is the other dispute, and Davis urged the Security Council to renew the Gang Suppression Force of Resolution 2793. That resolution was adopted on 30 September 2025, and Davis asked that it respect Haitian sovereignty.

For Cuba and Haiti as neighbours see The Bahamas and its neighbours in the Caribbean. For the island at the centre of the dispute, read Cuba explained.

Climate is existential for the islands, and Davis said Hurricane Dorian in 2019 cost about a quarter of national output. Most of the country sits barely above sea level, he added.

He also backed the Declaration on Sea-Level Rise of 24 September 2026 and CARICOM’s ten-point plan on reparatory justice. Finance is a grievance too, as on 19 October he said The Bahamas was put on lists it never wrote.

Safety at home is a separate matter, covered in Is the Bahamas safe for expats. Crime and travel advice are not repeated here.

How The Bahamas Compares With Its Peers

Among the small states compared here, The Bahamas is the richest per head. These IMF estimates for 2025 show the spread.

• The Bahamas: about 0.4 million people, GDP US$17.2 billion, US$41,728 a head, debt 71.7% of GDP.
• Barbados: 0.29 million, US$7.9 billion, US$27,246 a head, debt 96.2%.
• Trinidad and Tobago: 1.4 million, US$25.9 billion, US$18,068 a head, debt 84.0%; see Trinidad and Tobago in Latin America.
• Guyana: 1.0 million, US$26.8 billion, US$26,104 a head, debt 28.9%; see Guyana in Latin America.
• Jamaica: 2.8 million, US$22.6 billion, US$8,206 a head, debt 66.0%; see Jamaica in Latin America.
• Belize: 0.42 million, US$3.3 billion, US$7,954 a head, debt 66.9%; see Belize in Latin America.
• Dominican Republic: 10.9 million, US$127.9 billion, US$11,749 a head, debt 59.0%.
• Haiti: 12.6 million, US$32.1 billion, US$2,557 a head, debt 12.3%.

Guyana is the one rival on the rise, with the IMF projecting US$40.3 billion for 2026 and growth of 22.3%. Its income per head would reach US$38,572, close to The Bahamas’ US$43,858.

Size sets the limit on influence. The Bahamas compensates with a vote at the UN, a seat in the main regional clubs and a message about small states.

What It Means for US Readers

Florida is the economic neighbour. US goods sold to The Bahamas reached US$5.98 billion in 2025, and about 85% of visitors come from the United States.

For travellers, the Bahamian dollar is fixed at one per US dollar, so prices convert one to one. Safety advice is in the separate Rio Times guide linked above.

For investors, the IMF projects growth of 2.5% in 2026 and public debt of 70.2% of GDP. Debt and the National Investment Fund probe are the risks to watch.

For policy, The Bahamas is a test of US influence versus Chinese loans in the Caribbean. Nassau says it is open to both and subject to neither.

What Is Not Known

The interest rate and repayment terms of the Chinese hospital loan were not in the prime minister’s published remarks. The Bahamas’ attendance at the Bogotá summit is also unconfirmed.

The member lists of Mercosur and the Central American Integration System could not be opened on 20 October 2026. No claim is made about them.

The date of the next Commonwealth leaders’ meeting and the outcome of the UN Security Council’s September 2026 Haiti decision are unconfirmed. No prediction market with real trading on Bahamian politics was found on Polymarket on 20 October 2026, so none is shown.
