Spotify has launched its new Memberships feature in 34 markets, allowing eligible podcast creators to charge listeners a monthly fee for exclusive content and additional benefits.
Under the new system, creators will receive 90% of membership revenue, while Spotify will retain the remaining 10%.
The company first previewed the feature during its Investor Day in May. It replaces Spotify’s podcast subscription service, which launched in 2021.
Membership Features
Spotify Memberships allows podcast creators to offer exclusive audio and video content, bonus episodes, fewer advertisements, early access to episodes, and access to older content.
Creators can offer up to three membership tiers, each with different benefits and pricing. Spotify does not set subscription prices, leaving creators to decide how much to charge.
However, Spotify’s promotional examples show a monthly membership priced at $4.99 with a seven-day free trial.
Both Free and Premium Spotify users can view available membership plans directly on a podcast’s page. They can also access exclusive content within the Spotify app.
However, users must complete their payments through Spotify’s website rather than through in-app purchases.
Paid members can also display special badges when commenting on episodes, while creators can welcome new subscribers through dedicated video or audio clips.
Revenue and Creator Tools
Spotify will allow creators to keep 90% of membership revenue. The new feature will operate alongside existing monetization options, including advertisements, sponsorships, and the Spotify Partner Program.
The platform will also provide tools such as targeted promotions, free trials, and analytics to help creators understand what encourages listeners to subscribe.
Additionally, creators can export membership information, including contact details from users who voluntarily share them.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for Spotify Memberships, podcast creators must meet several requirements.
Their shows must be hosted on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone and have at least three published episodes.
They must also have at least 100 listeners or viewers and 100 hours of content consumption on Spotify during the previous 30 days.
Availability
Spotify Memberships is initially available for podcasts including The Adam Friedland Show, Making Sense with Sam Harris, The Shawn Ryan Show, and YMH Studios, which is introducing memberships across 12 shows.
The feature is rolling out in 34 markets, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Pakistan is not included in the initial rollout.
