The video, filmed at a church altar in Ecuador and shared on October 18, 2026, shows priest Patricio Alfredo Sanchez addressing his congregation with a heartfelt message about priorities in life.
What did Sanchez speak about in his last message?
The footage was originally published by ecuador.tv on Instagram and has since spread widely across social media.
During what turned out to be his last homily, Sanchez spoke with conviction about the way modern life distracts people from what truly matters.
He told his congregation that activities and routines often crowd out time that should be devoted to God, family and loved ones.
Will we all one day die?
"Dear friends, one day, all of us here will also die," he said, addressing those gathered in the pews. "Often, the time we spend on other things lacks the meaning found in the time we dedicate to God — the quality time we give to Him, to our brothers and sisters, to our spouses, our children, and our families."
He drew on the biblical teaching attributed to Jesus, telling his congregation to "give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's," and closed his reflection by asking God to accompany and bless them through the coming week.
The priest then led the congregation in the Apostles' Creed, reciting the profession of faith that speaks of death, resurrection and eternal life, before moving into the prayers of the faithful.
Sanchez dies at the altar
Shortly after delivering the reflection, Sanchez was struck and killed by a crucifix while still at the altar.
The tragedy lent his earlier words a chilling and deeply poignant significance, prompting widespread grief and reflection among those who have since watched the footage.
The video, framed with a bold red "ATTENTION" banner in the style of a breaking news report, has drawn enormous attention for the eerie weight of the priest's words in light of what followed.
