TOKYO (TR) – The sudden retirement of a popular adult video (AV) actress actress in 2014 sent shockwaves through the industry.
Now, a decade later, Uta Kohaku reveal to Nikkan Spa! (Oct. 21) the dark truth behind her disappearance: she fled a major production set to escape an obsessive fiancé who was tracking her every move via GPS.
Kohaku, who debuted in 2010 and quickly rose to top-tier status, vanished at the height of her popularity. In a recent interview, the former adult star detailed the harrowing domestic situation that forced her into sudden exile.
Engaged to be married
According to Kohaku, she was engaged to be married in late 2014 and had already secured permission from her agency to retire by December. However, as the wedding approached, her fiancé became mentally unstable and increasingly jealous of her career.
The breaking point occurred during a large-scale, top-secret shoot for a major AV manufacturer.
“I couldn’t tell him where I was because the production and cast were strictly confidential,” Kohaku explained. “But he had attached a GPS tracker to me and always knew my exact location.”
Fled by taxi
Enraged by her presence at an undisclosed location, the fiancé bombarded her with messages demanding to know what she was doing. When she refused to break a non-disclosure agreement, he threatened to send people to the site. Terrified that unauthorized men would storm a set filled with actresses and civilian male extras, Kohaku abruptly abandoned the shoot and fled in a taxi.
“I knew if I told the staff, they would try to stop me. I had no choice but to disappear,” she said. “In the taxi ride home, I knew my career was over.”
Her agency, furious over the abandonment, refused her requests to finish her remaining scheduled shoots and unilaterally announced her immediate retirement.
House arrest
What followed was a year of virtual house arrest. Kohaku described living in a state of extreme confinement under the control of her fiancé. She was forbidden from leaving Shinjuku Ward, constantly monitored by GPS, and required to respond to his messages instantly. Her contact list was restricted to her family and one trusted friend, fellow AV actress Haruki Sato.
The stress took a severe physical toll. Kohaku lost 10 kilograms, becoming so emaciated that when she finally visited an Akihabara DVD shop, the manager asked if she had been arrested for illegal drug use.
After enduring a year of confinement, Kohaku managed to persuade the man to break up with her. However, she found herself penniless and entirely cut off from normal society.
“I was free, but I didn’t have a single yen left from what I’d earned during my time as an adult film actress — so I was left wondering how I was going to survive,” she said.
“No educational background”
Attempts to integrate into civilian life failed. She enrolled in an art university but quickly dropped out, feeling alienated from the other students. A single attempt at a normal part-time job ended on the first day when a coworker instantly recognized her.
“I have no educational background, I’m no longer young, and I can’t put ‘AV actress’ on a resume,” Kohaku lamented. Even today, she receives direct messages on social media from strangers who spot her on trains. “I realized this is the heavy price you pay for becoming an AV actress.”
Selling home appliances
To survive, she returned to the nightlife industry, working at an AV-themed hostess club in Roppongi under her former stage name.
Despite her struggles, Kohaku has no intention of returning to the camera. When she floated the idea of a limited comeback, her manager bluntly told her there was no point, as she had already performed every hardcore act imaginable. Furthermore, Kohaku noted that strict new government compliance laws have sanitized the AV industry, making all shoots rigidly scripted—a far cry from the chaotic, boundary-pushing era she once ruled.
Today, Kohaku works behind the scenes at a friend’s company, producing and selling room diffusers for major department stores. However, the shadow of her past remains; she is strictly forbidden from using her real name or face in corporate dealings to protect the brand’s image.
She now balances her clandestine corporate job with occasional appearances at pachinko parlors and fan events, finally enjoying the freedom that was violently stripped from her ten years ago.
