John McEnroe wonders why American men’s tennis has not produced a grand slam champion in more than two decades, pointing to the success of Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal in Spain.
The former world No. 1 believes Spanish tennis has enjoyed an incredible period, first thanks to Nadal and now Alcaraz.
However, he cannot understand why the US has struggled to produce a men’s Grand Slam winner despite having many talented players.
The last American man to win a grand slam singles title was Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open. Since then, several American players have reached finals but failed to end the drought.
Speaking on the Spanish television show La Revuelta, the seven-time grand slam champion praised Alcaraz and admitted that the 23-year-old was his favourite player to watch.
McEnroe also mentioned young Spanish player Rafael Jodar, who has recently attracted quite a lot of attention following his performances on the ATP Tour.
The American tennis legend then compared Spain’s success with the situation in his own country, asking how such a big difference was possible.
During his appearance on La Revuelta, the 67-year-old started by expressing his admiration for Alcaraz, who has already collected seven grand slam titles.
“Carlos Alcaraz is the best. He’s my favourite. I’m not saying this just because I’m in Madrid. He is the best thing that happened to tennis in 10 years. Unbelievable. We’re lucky to have him,” McEnroe said.
The former world No. 1 also stressed that he was delighted to see the Spaniard competing again after his recent injury problems.
“He’s my favourite player to watch right now. So I’m happy he’s playing again because it was not good for tennis that he was out. And now another one maybe, Rafa Jodar,” the American added.
McEnroe then spoke about the influence Nadal had on Spanish tennis before Alcaraz started collecting grand slam titles.
“Spanish tennis... Rafa Nadal changed everything. Carlos Moya won one, but Nadal came on... unbelievable change for Spain.
“We haven’t had a male win a major tournament in 23 years in America. Not one. Rafa himself won 22,” McEnroe said.
